Cream Quartz or Dark Granite with my Cream Gloss Kitchen

I'm having a Cream Gloss kitchen in my new extension - the floor will be engineered wood throughout the extension - I was going to have a dark granite (black matt sort of granite with colours to pick up the cream) worksurface ( I really don't like many of the granite busy patterns so wanted a less busy one) - I don't want a wood surface.

I went to a kitchen place the other day and saw a cream gloss kitchen with a cream slightly speckly quartz worksurface. DH thinks it'll look "too cream" - I thought it looked fab and with the wooden floor being darker didn't think it would look too surgical....

What do you think about this...

with the cream gloss (handleless big drawer type contemporary kitchen) ?

PS I know it looks "busy" but in reality is quite subdued!

Do you have hard water? if so then possibly better to go light.

Alouiseg · 10/09/2010 19:30

Gorgeous, black is so over.......we have Navy blue quartz, I love it.

TheDailyWail · 10/09/2010 19:45

Please, when you get this done, upload a picture. I think you should go for a light colour.

teta · 10/09/2010 20:00

I like the light quartz but can someone explain to me what quartz is?Confused.I am the op for the other granite thread and am looking for a pale colour granite also with cream units[but probably matte cream wood ones].I think the cream plus cream will look light and airy especially with dark floors[i also have dark floors but terracota]!.

herbgarden · 10/09/2010 20:16

My DS just wants me to "make a decision!!" so he says.....I've had to make so many quick decisions that I'm really trying to think outside the box on this one - I've done a search of google images but this kitchen I saw in this showroom just looked lovely and it was what sold it for me I think. I just think the dark granite will look out of sync with my lovely contemp kitchen.

I promise to upload when it's finished but it may not be for a few months !

teta - the quartz is just another durable material - as durable as granite. You can get loads of different colours in quartz and you can also get more muted patterns unlike in granite where a lot of them are very "busy" - that's the way that the granite is, but if you don't like that look then the least busy sort of pattern you'll get in granite is probably the star galaxy which is almost black- hence my thoughts about getting quartz instead. Terracotta will be a similar shade to the wood we're getting (I had wanted a whitewashed sort of wood (erring on the swedish ) but DH drew the line !!

We have cream with cream - we went for Caesarstone (same quartzy stuff) IMO looks far more contemporary than cream and black. Plus with the gritty/sparkly bits doesnt show dirt or water marks. Shop around as you can get supply and fit for about a grand cheaper than your kitchen shop will quote you. Our fitters came over 100 miles! Also, get an induction hob if you haven't already, clean lines and as quick to heat as gas. We also have wood floor.

TheDailyWail · 13/09/2010 19:33

Mum to F - please post a picture to prove to my DH that it can look nice

Irishchic · 13/09/2010 19:42

OP That quartz one is gorgeous and would be much more practical. With or without hard water, the black granite is hard to keep looking good, it has to be buffed dry after its wiped or the cloth leaved smears.

Also, a paler worktop is brighter and more cheerful and lifts a room more so than the dark granite. I love the look of dark granite, but wold not want to live with it.

herbgarden · 16/09/2010 20:12

Mum2F - which Caesarstone colour did you go for and where did you get it (what part of the world are you ?) - I've made my mind up now re the cream so now am on the hunt for the best deal.

Me too herbgarden.Don't like kashmir gold as it is too busy so i am now looking for a light colour worktop.I found a plain cream with a very light sparkle[almost imperceptible]in quartz. But the price is arround a third more than granite- at around 310 pounds for templating ,cutting and fitting.

herbgarden · 16/09/2010 21:45

do you know make and colour teta ?

PaulineCampbellJones · 16/09/2010 21:48

The cream one is lovely. Black granite always reminds me of gravestones.

teta · 16/09/2010 22:04

No sorry ,but i know it wasn't caesarstone[which doesn't really help does it].Blush

herbgarden · 17/09/2010 19:59

don't worry I'll check out the caesarstone site -I'm sure there won't be many pure cream ones....

We have engineered oak floors, cream gloss and oak laminate units, and a brown (greybrown, almost taupe) quartz worktop: looks fantastic, very modern and also very practical.

Much prefer the cream you chose to dark granite!

nymphadora · 17/09/2010 20:37

cream gloss , walnut worktop & slate floor here so if you've got wood floor I would go with the black

MumtoF · 17/09/2010 21:10

Am in Gloucestershire but supply/ fitters came from Wigan! Chose Nougat after much deliberation and many samples. Luckily I never delete any emails so have put their info below:

Thought this may help.

I have engineered oak flooring in my kitchen extension with whistish kitchen cabinets.
However, we have chosen to have star galaxy granite worktops and this is the effect.

All very similer to your house but in black.

I will try to put a picture of the kitchen in my profile.

twolittledarlings · 20/09/2010 17:10

Sorry for the mess.

The granite is black with subtle white bits. Not as busy as you think. As we didn't want a solid black one, this one sontrast quite nicely with the white cabinets.

Hope this will give you an idea as to what a black/white kitchen with wood flooring will look like.

frostyfingers · 21/09/2010 08:29

When sourcing stone worktops don't forget to try funeral/memorial masons - they are sometimes cheaper than kitchen places.

teta · 21/09/2010 11:48

Thats what i am doing FrostyFingers.240 pounds for granite[per square metre] including cutting and fitting and about a third more for quartz.Does that sound reasonable?.

twolittledarlings · 21/09/2010 19:37

Why don't you try Stone Gallery. They do all types of Stones and Tiles Vanity and Kitchen tops - supplied and fitted.

Tel 07852 617 627 / 07983 087 630.

They gave us a very good deal with our black granite and did a very good job. Well recommended.

maidinheaven · 21/09/2010 23:52

Just come across this thread and we had black sparkly quartz worktops fitted last month by T Foley Interiors and we're really pleased with the job they did. They look great. To the poster who wanted to find out more about quartz the website is www.kitchensfitted.co.uk and I spent a lot of time reading up on there before buying.
Quartz is actually more durable than granite and all types of quartz including Caesarstone is apparently made on the same machine. Most quartz surfaces come with a 10 year guarantee but the Star galaxy granite we were considering beforehand didn't have any. We made a good choice and DH spends more time in the kitchen now so I'm doubly pleased. Only thing left now is the walls above the tops and we're thinking of glass splashbacks so if anyone has any recommends it would be good to hear.
