Is 230 pounds a good price for a granite worktop?.This includes the cost of cutting and honing and comes in a range of sizes apparently. These are prices from my local funeral stonemasons Hmm.They say this is cheap,is it?

No

That seems to me to be an average price for a mid-range granite. I've been looking at Cargo Granite online and that's about the price (from around £200 to £300 per square metre) that I've found there (and they are one of the most reasonably priced places when looking online. Would your local stonemason be the best person to fit your kitchen granite if you can get a similar price at a kitchen granite specialist ? Just wondering !

HerHonesty · 10/09/2010 19:36

depends on what type of granite but yes it does sound reasonable.

cornsilk909 · 10/09/2010 19:40

really? I'm sure ours wasn't that much. Unless dh has been telling me fibs....

I think they started providing this service in april and since then have done about 20 kitchens.I like kashmir granite [browny/orangy flecks] which is about 240 pounds/metre.They will do the drainboard cutting etc. included in the price which seems reasonable.I would rather support a local business [within reason!] as we live in a rural area and i am not keen on ordering online from overseas.I also believe that the company itself has been doing kitchens for some time from another small town and have now relocated to our place [although have been in the tombstone business for a long time here]!

Replied to you on my thread but in view of what you said then that sounds reasonable if it includes teh cutting etc. For eg for 4.7 meters square of a £230 ish square metre price of granite with sink cut outs, tap holes, drainer, island unit end etc and fitting the quote comes in at around £2.5k (magnet quoted almost double - horrendous !! even though their kitchens are fairly good value in their "sales")

Wow,is Magnet really that much.Does it really cost that much for fitting?ShockI was thinking of asking my local friendly builder to do it in a day!.I have just googled quartz - it is a manmade composite?.Is it cheaper or similar to granite in price?.My dh wants a marble worktop which is not as hardwearing as granite. The kashmir granite looks very similar to some marble and is the lightest colour i can find apart from a cold grey/white marble.

depends on which granite you choose. If you choose a fairly mainstream one mid price it'll be about the same as a quartz. The cygnus pearl one I was looking at was one of the more pricey ones and it ends up being about £500 more than the mid range granite.

Fitting was around £500 and then VAT is added....

teta · 10/09/2010 20:55

I think i will have to look at some quartz in situ as it sounds very child-proof.I don't know whether its reached our neck of the woods yetConfused.Yep,i always forget about the vat!.

I'll be buying mine online....Cargo Granite in bedford (google cargo granite and you'll find it) is probably where I'll go - I went and visited them and they were really good/professional and had some good slabs to look at so you could get the full effect (granite) and then the usual samples for quartz. They are also competitively priced. They're not near me but they deliver/fit mostly nationwide. The upside is that all their materials are cut on their site in the uk unlike for eg diapol where the cutting is done in I think Slovenia or similar and then transported over.

I am getting my kitchen from Magnet but having shopped around a lot of places for the worksurfaces, even in their so called 50% sale their quartz/granite is still more expensive than the "usual" price of other prices....They don't have the margins to cut the price on the granite I suppose - they have to supply via third parties and equally they seem to be on the "make" with it when not in one of their "sales"...
