Planning permission - would we need it?

Considering buying an ugly 1960's house - we'll only buy it on the condition we'd get planning permission to extend.

Also, we'd like to alter the way it looks - perhaps with hung tiles or cladding or rendering - changing the look of it.

Once we've changed it, it would no longer look like the other houses on the estate. Would we need planning permission to alter the way it looks when it's on a 1960's estate?

You need to find out if it is in a conservation area or in an area covered by an "article 4" direction. Your council website should be able to help.

You can look up addresses on the planning portal too and any constraints such as conservation area or article 4 will be listed under the, um, constraints tab (I think - it's not immediately obvious but not hidden either.)

you might. but to be honest why would you bother making a house on a 60's estate not look like a 60'e estate house?
