Duck egg walls for bedroom. Which (ready made) curtains? Oh and bedding.

I haven't had a nicely decorated bedroom since I was about 15 (i.e. MANY years ago). Now I've ordered a lovely new bed and the decorator is booked. The last room in the house to be done after moving in 9 Shock years ago!

So I've got my heart set on duck egg blue walls and need to find some good quality curtains. I know I could get some made to measure but they would be ££££ and it would mean actually going to a shop with DP (who's not right interested but wouldn't be happy with the wrong thing).

I've looked at John Lewis, Next and Laura Ashley and I'm not particularly excited by anything.

Any suggestions from you clever stylish folk?

Have you looked at dunhelm mill?
Love duck egg blue - dd's bedroom is this colour.

These are OK. I don't LOVE them though.

Maybe you're not supposed to LOVE curtains.

We have bedroom walls in skylight from farrow & ball which is v similar to duck-egg. We have crisp white bed linen (when it's ironed) and a lovely blackout blind from Tinsmiths in a natural ticking stripe.

But we have a small sash window. If I had French windows I'd have gorgeous white muslin ready made curtains and maybe a concealed roller blind to keep the street lighting out and my privacy.

What size and shape is your window?

ZinglebertBembledank · 30/08/2010 15:38

That sounds lovely March. It's a terrace house so it's a tall and narrow window. At least a 90 drop.

I definitely want lined curtains to block some light out.

the blue drama fabric is nice and they make curtains

brave pattern though

the f&b skylight looks lovely. Is it a greyish blue?

ggirl that fabric is rather nice. I do fancy something a bit special. Maybe I should go to a nice fabric/curtain shop.

designers guild have lush fabric

I was going to suggest Dunelm Mill as well, if you have a branch near you they make curtains as well and have quite a good range of fabrics.
I don't think you can always rely on a website for fabrics, you need to see and feel them as well.

The skylight looks more blue on our walls. I wanted grey-blue like the cottages on the il-de-re in France but I like what we've ended up with.

Do check out Tinsmiths I've linked to their ticking fabrics but they also do made to measure curtains and blinds. I think our blind all in was about £125 including postage.

They will also make up curtains if you supply the fabric. We have a Roman blind so we have a band of fabric at the top of the window which frames it quite nicely. We are also in a terrace. A really tiny Georgian cottage terrace though, so curtains weren't right for us because there isn't enough height or width.

If you've waited 9 years you deserve something really special.

What's your taste? Do you like prints? Stripes? Blocks of colour? Florals?

Are you looking for natural fabrics and dyes or something more sumptuous?

Get a A4 sheet of white card, and paint it with your chosen colour [big is good for visualising this stuff I find]

When it is dry, head to Dunelm Mill, and go to their rolls of fabric.

THere will be one that leaps out at you - right colour, right sheen, right weight, right pattern.

THen ask the scary 17 year old to price up your chosen style. LISTEN CAREFULLY as she may tell you that if you delay ordering until XYZ they are having a sale.

Pick up your fantabulous curtains a week or two later, clutching all the money you saved by not going to John Lewis and not compromising with their frankly buttoned up and dull/extortionate and flashy fabrics.

hehe thanks all, some good advice here.

And yes, you're right I DO deserve something really special!

I usually have quite plain stuff; either plain colours or stripes. So I think I fancy something a bit more, well fancy. Something with a nice texture and an interesting design. Not so much traditional. I suppose it would have to be white with blue or grey pattern wouldn't it?

I will definitely get down to see the youngsters with tape measures at Dunelm.

There's some gorgeous stuff on the tinsmiths and designers guild sites isn't there?
