Art for living room/bedroom walls

Afternoon all

not long moved into a great new home.

not too grand, but v pleasant edwardian period with quite high ceilings...and therefore big, blank walls.

i think it's time to move on from our old stuff we had in our 1930s semi, so i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts/suggestions on what to put up/where to find interesting/good/tasteful stuff.

have been mooching around various places recently but nothing's grabbed me as yet.

the living room has some nice bookshelves and fireplace/mantlepiece for family photos etc and the walls are light and plain at the moment....

ditto our main bedroom really. what to put above the marital bed?!

just wondering if anyone had any thoughts/opinions

thanks

What's a linoprint?

CerealOffender · 29/08/2010 21:15

this sort of think zingle

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 29/08/2010 21:18

Ah, like a woodcut? Only made with lino I presume...

CerealOffender · 29/08/2010 21:19

yes the clue is in the name

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 29/08/2010 21:23
Grin
ZinglebertBembledank · 29/08/2010 21:30

Ah right. I was looking at folksy earlier. over 300 pages of art to wade through...

Attenborough · 29/08/2010 21:48

Ooh, Cereal! I am intrigued. Give me a minute and I'll post some links.

JandLandG · 29/08/2010 21:48

wow, thanks for all these thoughts everyone...really good.

perhaps not a marylin monroe poster above the sofa at this stage in my life, but other good ideas here...

""i like this one for a bit of fun in the loo or somewhere"

was at an antiquey/markety outdoor thing the other day and there was so much rubbish that they were wanting £££ for...we're a bit funny though in that i know we won't leave walls blank for too long...just seems like an empty/unfinished house...bit daft really, i suppose.

posh/tasteful/learned great friends of ours still have a relatively empty house years and years after moving back from the states...every now and again they buy something nice though....i don't think they've ever even heard of ikea!

we had a couple of nice charles rennie mackintosh prints in our last place - they'd fit nicely with the period of this house, but maybe a bit bored of them now... "might keep this one up for a while though"

I was just admiring that shipping forecast print - I've been after one for a while! Shame it's not framed.

Attenborough · 29/08/2010 21:55

Actually,
Cereal, the ones I like mainly fall into two categories but I haven't seen any that I absolutely love yet. I really like typographical ones, but haven't seen any with words that are exactly right for us, and also those based on landscapes - for example, both of these,

but again, I'd like it to be something really meaningful, something like a place we already love, rather than just something that looks nice.

It needs to be reasonably big, so I'm expecting a poster print of a linoprint, if you know what I mean.

We have some other stuff by Bold & Noble which we love, so if you know them that to give you a feel.

ZinglebertBembledank · 29/08/2010 22:04

For anyone else dull like me who loves maps, several options here.

e.g. personalised framed maps of a special location

On a less soppy note, I like this

Attenborough · 29/08/2010 22:06

Ah yes, we have a massive world map (Peters Projection, of course...) framed in our kitchen, Zinglebert!

CerealOffender · 29/08/2010 22:10

atten - i have 2 prints by zebedee! i really like them. i do a bit myself. i fyou need big a screen print might be more up your street.

i really like angie lewin or this guy

ZinglebertBembledank · 29/08/2010 22:10

Attenborough - SNAP!!!!!

Attenborough · 29/08/2010 22:19

By "big", I mean about 70cm x 100cm, Cereal - do you think a screenprint would be better for something that size?

Loving the kindred spirits here!

ZinglebertBembledank · 29/08/2010 22:24

Quite taken by the linoprints.

I also like this kind of stuff.

CerealOffender · 29/08/2010 22:28

i thought you meant huge. no you could get a lovely relief print that size.

CerealOffender · 29/08/2010 22:29

Has anyone used wall stickers before? I found this website www.stickerswal.com, where they sell them. It looks similar to wall art but I'm not sure whether I should go for a canvas instead or one of these. It looks much more interesting. any ideas?

stpcyp · 29/08/2011 20:10

sorry made a mistake the website I was talking about is www.stickerswall.com, you can also find it on google. There are others as well.

angel1976 · 29/08/2011 22:43

I personally think wall stickers are a bit kitschy and will date very fast BUT I love the way it works in a children's room and that's probably the only room I will dare use it in... So I have ordered this to go into my DSs' 'sleep' room, which is kept fairly bland. My DS1 loves monkeys and will love this!

angel1976 · 29/08/2011 22:44

Sorry, this one is the proper wall sticker.

icapturethecastle · 29/08/2011 23:40

I love collecting first edition books and have had a few of my favourite books dustjackets scanned, enlarged and framed. They look brilliant, are personal to me and I also know one else will have them. The end up looking like vintage posters.
