Moving into a new build

We're moving into a new build property in a few weeks and wondered if anyone had any hints and tips. We're all prepared for that mile-long snagging list but its stuff like ordering bins from the council, getting BT to connect the phones that I hadn't thought of until now.

So go ahead, give me all your horry stories, tips and to do list items please.

Thanks.

No real horror stories, but it did feel a bit like staying in a hotel and not a real home until we had personalised it all a bit.
It seems to be the case that neighbours are very friendly in new houses - you have all started an adventure together. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you will have no maintenance to finance - put a bit aside from when you move in as a few years down the line you will need new kitchen appliances etc, and as they were all new together they all give up the ghost in rapid sucession!

air the place very well to get rid of residue moisture from building to avoild mould.

Mousy is right - keep your windows open.

Before we moved in we got a flooring company to put in carpets, vinyl and wooden floors. I found this was a great help.

Make sure you check the electric/gas meters when you get the keys.

We got our phone, tv and broadband through sky - we live in a village where tv signal is not great so this was the best option for us. Also their phone connection fee was cheaper than bt's.

Send back all your warranty and guarantee slips for extended warranty.

Make sure you get a number you can call with any snagging that needs dealt with quickly.

Don't paint. There's no point in the first year as it will just crack.

When you get the keys make a note of any issues you see in the house - we regret not pointing out the dented skirting board as we're stuck with it now.

Also, check all your power points and phone points to make sure they work.

That's all I can think of just now.
