We are finally getting a new kitchen! Hurrah! We were sold on the idea of black granite worktops (cream kitchen) until we saw the price... solid wood is half the price at least.

WWYD?

Thanks QLB!

I really love the look of wood and I think I've come to the conclusion that I should just go for it, stop being a domestic slattern (or try to mend some of my ways at least) and if I ruin it, then I'll send myself to bed with no supper and get laminate.

Hi

I've just been throught this issue and went for the honed granite. but am having problems with maintainance. If I leave it clear of products it is a grey colour and shows grease v.easily. If i use cleaner/polish it is a darker grey/black but shows water rings. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi
i am a director of a marble and granite company (and a mummy) we do a cleaning product that works really well its everything in one bottle, i will have a look into it for you. As i have posted in a previous post granite can be as expensive or as cheap as you like . Black granite is not the most expensive granite, our most popular and cheapest granite is black. We do have very expensive blacks aswell but they have gold flecks etc. If you come direct to someone like us then the granite is reasonable , but we supply magnet etc who double our price and very high end kitchen companies that treble it!!

oh and we do supply lots of footballers but they go for the man made quartz in bright colours !!!

Thanks

I love my black granite. It is not the totally black one as that was very expensive, so we went for one with larger crystals. We got it direct from the granite wholesale so it ended up costing half what magnet & mfi quoted! It's 5years old & looks pristine despite us being in a hard water area. I wipe it over with a damp cloth as you would with any worktops and then use one of those mucrofibre cloths to dry which leaves it shiny & only takes an extra minute. I love that I don't have to worry about putting hot stuff straight from oven on it, and as it is so cold it is ace for rolling pastry on :). Would definitely get granite again, but not keen on the lighter tortoiseshell-type ones. I think it looks fab with White/cream cupboards, but we have dark walnut wood cupboards & I love it!

We have black granite worktops and I hate them - they were brand new in the house when we bought it so too expensive to justify removing it.

Being black, they suck light out of the room, which faces east so not very light anyway. And I think they are naff. And the granite has gone all grey and horrid near the taps.

We have black granite worktops and splashbacks. I love them. I can put hot pans on them, the dcs can chop stuff on them, all manner of things have been spilled on them and they look brand new, even though we have now had them nearly 6 years.

To clean them I was told to use water with a tiny, tiny bit of washing up liquid. I have made up a very, very dilute spray and just spray it and dry it with kitchen roll and it looks fantastic.

They are in an open plan kitchen, diner, family room with glass walls round a complete half of the room though so the light was not an issue.

I like the look of wood but have never seen it looking in great condition in any of my friends' homes. They are much more house proud than me too. I think it is just hard to keep looking good.

My parents have corian in their bathroom and it is a nightmare. They can't lay anything down on it and have to clean it with specialist products. It may have improved over the years or they may just be being a bit precious about it but I wouldn't choose it myself just because they are so anxious about theirs.

Realise this is a zombie thread, but it popped up just at the right time .... I've been dithering for days over whether to get wooden worktops and this has been so helpful. Bugger it I'm going to get them. Luckily I have a love for danish oil ... Grin
