No specific advice but if you live anywhere round Goole be very very careful that you do not choose a house in the flood area. I come from York which is upstream and that floods badly, Selby area is worse and anywhere further downstream.

Goole is right on a bend in the river and is notorious for floods. Trust no one who tells you that their house has not flooded. Houses that appear cheap and have been newly refurbed in the last few years are real danger signs.

Check the environment agency map here by puttng the post code of any house you are thinking of in the search box on the top right. I just put in Goole as a search term and the whole map is all in the dark high risk blue flood area.

North Lincolnshire is safer from flooding and I also think a nicer place to live. Commute via the Humber bridge.

v good advice from BeenBeta re floods.

Would Pocklington be too far a commute for your dh?

Steer clear of Goole itself - just my opinion (no offence intended to residents) but it's one of a few small towns/villages in Yorks/Lincs that are quite isolated and can be a bit, well, odd as a result. Goole also pretty deprived in places. And good advice about the flooding.

Howden is about 4 miles away and is a lovely village, but quite small. It has a few shops, though, and a good community although the houses become quite spread out outside the village centre. And the train station is a good mile out of the centre.

There are some nice villages as you head towards Doncaster, with the advantage that you are getting nearer the big city lights of Sheffield, although Sheffield iteself prob too far to commute.

I'd look north towards York and Leeds, although again, the towns and villages can be a bit out on their own until you get to the cities.

Oh, Epworth on the Isle of Axholme in N Lincs is lovely, very rural. Steer clear of Scunthorpe though.

I'd say you'd have to visit any that look good and decide if you like their quirks Smile.

If you choose North Lincs, remember the cost of going over the Humber Bridge is about a fiver a day.

Someone said steer clear of Scunthorpe, but some of the the villages around that area are lovely... Burton Stather, Burringham, Messingham are all nice.

I am near Market Rasen and my DH works in Hull. Takes him about 40 to 50 mins to get there.

Lastyearsmodel · 20/08/2010 13:03

You wouldn't need the bridge from N Lincs, just straight across on the M180 - Goole is at the other end of the Humber Estuary, the crook of the elbow, so to speak.

Yes, lovely villages round Scunthorpe, just not Scunthorpe itself!

Beverley is nice.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 20/08/2010 20:46

Bawtry always seems like a nice place when I drive through it. No idea about schools.

thelunar66 · 20/08/2010 21:59

Oh yes... Bawtry - I always think it looks lovely when I pass through on my way to Meadowhall or Doncaster outlet.

I once stopped for breakfast at a very posh tea shop there on the cobbly bit. Best breakfast I ever had. And the China Rose very posh chinese is gorgeous!

treedelivery · 20/08/2010 22:04

Barkston Ash, a lovely village if you can afford it. Beverly is lovely too, and has a nice town centre.

Lastyearsmodel · 21/08/2010 18:53

Had forgotten about Beverly. Would you need to commute via Hull or can you cut across? Hull rush hour A63 traffic can be v bad. North Ferriby also lovely.

Bawtry is gorgeous, as is Tickhill not too far away, but Bawtry is right in the Doncaster airport flight path at the end of the runway - some parts OK but some very noisy.

onimolap · 21/08/2010 19:00

Lincolnshire never abolished its grammar schools, and that might be a consideration for you; house prices tend to be below national average. Harrogate also has excellent state schools, but house prices are high.

feedthegoat · 21/08/2010 19:15

I used to work in Bawtry and thought it was nice. Tichill too but you are probably straying further for your commute. Hatfield is quite nice too and not far from Goole either.

I live in Doncaster and areas vary greatly, some are lovely and other far from it. However in general there are some good facities here and transport links are generally very good, being on the east coat mainline, well served for motorways and the airport.

I have always joked that one of the advatages of Doncaster is how easy it is to get out of Grin.

whoopstheregoesmymerkin · 21/08/2010 19:27

Market Weighton (small town, little tesco, nice butchers, bakers, library etc, secondary school)
or
Holme on Spalding Moor (more villagey)

ejho · 22/08/2010 21:34

thank you so much for all your help, have been checking out those areas. lincolnshire does seem cheaper with some lovley villages.

Just been to Dunnington, what a gorgeous village that was. Lovely houses and pubs. Easy to get to York too, if need be.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 23/08/2010 12:49

DH comes from N Lincs and his parents still live near Northorpe. All those little villages round there seem really nice with a good community, some nice pubs, etc. House prices are good compared with everywhere else! And yes, grammar school system still in force - DH benefitted from that very well. Smile
