What is the best for chairs with casters? Do silicon/plastic chair mats stop office chairs ripping up wood floors?

It's not just the chair wheels, but the feet under the desk that wear the floor surface. Get one of the(sadly not ver attractive) T-shaped mats specifically for this purpose. Even a cheap one works well oncarpet, where you barely notice the edge, but for a hard floor I'd recommend getting one with a soft bevelled edge.

Hmm, going for a wood floor. Would a rug not work as well as a t-shaped mat?

No, because the edges curl up from the movement of the chair to and fro. The middle of the rug stretches, but the outside doesn't. You also need to protect the floor under yourfeet where you sit at the desk, so the rug has to extend beneath the desk. A rug, being fabric, gets tugged about by the movement of the chair, yet it is pinned down by the desk legs, which makes it ruck up in ripples.

It seems that there are more shapes than just Ts.

They alll seem to be polycarbonate, yet I am sure that I have seen slightly padded ones for hard floors in RL.

Thanks for those.
