Question about removals costs when you are putting furniture into storage for about 6-8 weeks

My mum and dad are moving house soon but will need to have their furniture in storage for about 6-8 weeks.

They are moving to a new build and as part of it they get removals costs paid for. They were expecting to have to pay the storage but today were told that as they are having items stored and then moved to the new house, that this counts as two moves and so they will have to pay for one of the moves.

Is this right - does it cost twice as much (plus storage) to move when you are having items stored? They have been told it will be approx £1,250 that they have to pay so I am assuming the whole thing (excluding storage) would be £2,500. They are moving about 200 miles and from a 4 bed to another 4 bed, but are getting rid of quite a bit of furniture first.

I am not sure who they would be haggling with - I think the building company told them about this today, but they (the company) seemed shocked about it too. I thought if they had a bit of information about how it is normally charged that they could hopefully get some reduction.

Any thoughts welcome Smile

I'd call around and get quotes.
My experience isnt comparable as I moved within the same town and had a lot less than a 4bed house worth of stuff but them taking it to storage and then moving it to new place 5 weeks later cost me £120.
Companies were more than happy to give quotes, so I'd do that and if the difference is significantspeak to the property company.

I cant actually remember now how the price broke down, I dont recall that there was two lots of moving costs though - and I dont see that there would have been scope for that in a £120 bill.

Thanks Smile - I have suggested that they get a few quotes from other people to use as a guideline.

They've been having a few hassles with their buyers and so I want everything to be sorted out easily for them.
