Washing machine in outside loo?

Have decided that the biggest boost to my quality of life would be to get a dishwasher. Unfortunately I only have room in my kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher, not both (getting rid of the wm is naturally unthinkable!)

So I'm wondering if it's possible to remove the loo in the outside wc and put the wm in there instead?

Has anyone done this successfully? Any advice or things I should be aware of?

TIA

i wouldn't. we had a washing machine in an outside shed and every winter it would freeze solid meaning no clean clothes and trips to neighbours houses or the laundrette to do washing.

it was a real PITA.

Sounds grim, not a scenario I'd want with 2 young dc's. Anyone else?

My uncle has a w/m in his car port - if the pipes are properly lagged it should be fine. I'd definitely consider it.

We were in the same situation and put our washing machine in the garage. The garage was not attached to the house, and in winter it was a bloody nightmare, it went dark really early, it was freezing cold, the pipes froze up regularly etc etc. I wouldn't do it if I were you. As Bamboobutton says a total PITA.

I used to have the washing machine in an outhouse - it never froze up, but it was a total pita having to go outside to put the washing in and take it out.

Do you have room in your bathroom for the washing machine?

No room in bathroom unfortunately Sad

Hmm, sounds like it isn't the perfect solution after all!

Thanks for all your input

I have a tumble dryer in our out-house (not the same I grant you) and we haven't had any problems with it.

I have had an outside laundry for 6 years now. And I have had a dishwasher too.

(I hated the dishwasher - much prefer to wash my dishes in the sink dry them and put them away...but I realise that is not the norm and that the theory breaks down if DH/DC are not like minded!Wink)

Outside laundry is about to come inside when our extension is completed. I am very excited about that and I have promised myself an 11kg washer (yes, sad I know!). one of the difficulties I have found an increasing pain is that as my DC are growing I seem to do much more washing than I did before. Because the washer and the dryer are outside it is not as convenient to keep on top of the washing. I get put off too easily if it is snowing or thrashing down with rain. I dislike going out in my dressing gown to sort out my washing at odd times so I am looking forward to being able to sort it out at all times of the day or night!

on the plus side, I never have any frozen pipes issues, not even this winter and we had snow for three whole moths! Also, I never have the noise of the machines and if I am feeling really lazy I can leave it unsorted out of sight(thus, it does not exist Wink) in the laundry.

I think your comment about the dressing gown has put the final nail in the coffin for this idea!

Will keep hassling DH for an extension instead Smile

Cometherevolution, I hope it was the sentiment and not a conjured up image!Grin It is, in fact,a very nice dressing gown,.....!

LittlePushka · 16/08/2010 22:38

PS definitely an extension,...allows you to retain your dignity in any old manky dressing gown!

Thank you magic homes. Unfortunately I dont have space for two and a dryer!

I am hoping a bigger drum will mean less washes per week (so hopefully more economical in the long run).
