Anyone got an Ikea Ektorp sofa?

We need a couple of comfy, not too posh sofas for our family room (complete with a toddler with a penchent for spilling things!).

I was considering two Ektorp sofas from Ikea as they are loose covered and well-priced. Has anyone experience of how comfy they turn out to be after a couple of years bouncing aruond on them and do they last in terms of structure and looks?

THANKS :)

Can I ask about the seat pad cushions please?

Its just that we dismissed the Ektorp thinking it wouldn't last as well as a more expensive sofa but the more expensive one we bought from elsewhere has been a big disappointment. The seat pads just don't keep their shape and have big dips in. I'm constantly plumping them up.

Is the Ektorp like this?

We have had a corner one in our family room for 6 years and it's brilliant. The DCs regularly jump on it, take the cushions off to make dens etc and it still keeps going and going.

The cushions on it don't need much plumping up or anything and I've found it very low maintenance. Have washed the covers several times and they come up looking lovely. Only thing I find a pain, but one I can live with, is when you remove the cushion covers you have to deal with feathers migrating out of their lining.

I think it is really good value.

We have two leathers ones, but they were only delivered this morning, we are very pleased so far Wink

The good thing about an Ektorp is that the covers are washable and can be changed relatively easily.

We have 2 2-seater sofas which have really done the job and have kept their shape after being regularly jumped on and abused!

The only gripe is that there is an irritating noise/squeak made by the metal and wood frame of one of the sofas - in spite of best efforts, we haven't found the cause or solution!!

For the price, it is hard to beat!

Had ours nearly 10 yrs and they have survived 3 housemoves and 3 boistrous children on them for the last 5 yrs.

covers wash really well and got two sets of covers one for autumn/winter other for spring/summer.

Really impressed with them and willbuy again when these finally die.

It definitely sounds like we should have gone for the Ektorps when we bought ours.

We specifically wanted removable covers which seem to be quite rare. I think the Ikea ones were 'suspiciously cheap' in comparison to other brands so we thought that they couldn't possibly be any good.

How wrong we were!

Not only are our seat cushions crap but the colour really faded unevenly on the first wash of the covers.

I feel a trip to Ikea coming on Wink

we had one in our previous rented flat. it was leather and soo easy to keep clean (probably goes for all leather surfaces). I roated the cushions so they did not change their shape too much.

Does anyone have any experience of the Ektorp sofa beds? I was considering a 3 seater sofa plus sofa bed for my new house, as I won't have a spare bedroom due to downsizing. Are they comfortable and do they wear as well as the normal sofa?

llareggub · 06/08/2010 13:22

We've got the sofabed. It's OK; great as a bed but as a sofa it seems to have a narrower seat then the normal sofa. It seems pretty robust. My only niggle is that the zip broke when I washed the cover, so I'm going to need to replace the covers soon.

We have Ektorp 3 seater, 2 seater, 2 chairs and sofa bed. Beige covers.

All great, all kept their shape and have survived 6 yrs use, 4 house moves, a newborn, a couple of dogs and up to 5 yrs and last year 3 (larger) teenagers sitting on them soaking wet on a daily basis...... mind you, I have bought new covers this year! (Navy blue and grey!)

Sofabed is fine for occaisional use (as a bed - think it wouold be too hard permanently) but is slightly smaller and I feel slightly harder to sit on.

We did have 2 footstools/boxes but they broke after less than a year - so not worth it.

We got our furniture in Germany - and paid around 800 Euros for the lot 6 yrs ago - amazing value - would happily have paid double!

LtEveDallas · 06/08/2010 13:38

Gah - that should be .....a newborn up to 5 yrs old, a couple of dogs, and last year.....

(added the dogs as an afterthought - because of course they never sit on the sofa mum Hmm}

I have an Ektorp sofa bed. It's about seven years old, I originally bought it when I was single and child-free, now DS is 4.

It's had some abuse from DS (jumping on etc etc) and still hasn't started sagging. Mattress is quite comfy for a sofa bed and thicker than alot of others.

On the down-side when in bed form you have to be careful not to whack your legs off the metal parts, prolly the same for all sofa beds though. Also if you have carpet you'll need carpet protectors for the legs in bed form.

We used it in bed form for months, even while I was preggers.

It's our main sofa now.

4madboys · 06/08/2010 16:41

ooh we need a new sofa and these sound good, i shall go and check them out, i need something to withstand the four madboys and the new baby!

my problem tho is that i am in norwich, so nearest ikea miles away, would maybe have to hire a van or something to get them here....... that would be dp's problem tho! Grin

Wilts · 07/08/2010 14:48

4mad- if you order them online, delivery is reasonable.

When we purchased ours we arranged delivery from in-store and it was £50 which I didn't think was too bad.

teta · 07/08/2010 16:27

Ours have survived 7 years of hongkong life and 4 kids [ no dogs - kids are enough!].The covers are knackered but the sofas are still ok.Having spent tres pounds on Sofa Workshop sofas years ago and spent loads more money on recovering and replacing the feather cushions - i don't think expensive sofas are worth it [ especially not with kids].
