John Lewis Range cooker

Hi...has anyone bought a John Lewis Range cooker...900mm one?

I was looking in to buying one but they got a terrible write up in Which...I think they are made by Smeg.

Be grateful to hear from anyone who has one to see if they are as bad as Which reported!

Thank you

I am in the same boat as you and completely confused as to which one to buy. Which? gave a Leisure one a tremendous write-up with 71%, alongside a Rangemaster one which was £1000 more. We went to look at the Leisure and Flavel ones yesterday and I am happy that I saw them as they looked very badly made with cheap plastic knobs etc.
We need one that is either 100 or 110cm and just don't know what to go for. We are wanting one in stainless steel and are now more wanting one with just the two doors rather than four doors which apparently can't get big roasting trays in them, etc.
We did like the John Lewis one at £999 but the Which report wasn't great. Aaaarrggghhh!
I would love to hear what anyone has to say in answer to your question re the John Lewis one or any other options...

Hi Gloriaaa....I saw the Leisure range cookers too in Comet and I agree they looked cheap and Comet didn't recommend them so I am equally confused by the Which? report. John Lewis rarely sells a bad appliance but it really did badly in the report.

I may go now for a built in double oven again as the Range Masters are expensive.

We could do with some more options!

I have a JL one, but it was twice the price (think the £900 is the cheapest, then the one I got, then they jump to twice that again). Mine is made by Britannia and seems to be v good so far, haven't had it long.

When I compared the £900 and the £1800 one in the shop I did think that the cheaper one just felt a bit more flimsy - structure, knobs, door mechanism.

Sales person said that basically all the ovens do exactly the same, you are paying for either an extra oven / warming drawer etc or in fact for chunkier knobs, structure, fittings, the things that go on the hob etc.

Had a single Smeg oven for a few years. It was ok for about 3 yrs then started going wrong and was constantly breaking in different ways - thermostat was faulty, then fusing constantly, didn't heat up properly, grill went...

so glad Ive seen this .. I was just about to go and look at the John Lewis 90cm range too.. havent seen the which report. The Rangemaster Toledo 90 is the other one I was looking at but that is £350 more than John Lewis.. Maybe it is worth paying the extra after all.. will watch this thread with interest. (my local appliance didnt rate the leisure one either.

scubagoose · 06/08/2010 07:29

what did which say was wrong with the John Lewis? I remember another thread on mumsnet someone had a Smeg and didnt recommend it.. Am I going to have to find the extra £350 for the Rangemasters???

badembabe · 06/08/2010 10:13

Suggest you look on pricerunner I went into my local highend electrical shop and they had a fabulous deal on a fisher and paykel one for 800 quid (homegoods they're called in bicester) they are on the net so have a look you so don't need to pay all that money. Redhill appliances are also v competitive.

poppy20 · 07/08/2010 17:35

Had another look on Which and it said that the John Lewis range oven was slow to heat up and didn't have good temperature accuracy inside the oven....they said some parts were hotter than others. The grills were good though.

It's put me off really! I am now going for a built in double oven as you seem to get more for your money. I still like the Range Master though, they look great but I am trying to cut costs!

my sister had a john lewis cooker installed recently, can't remember why but the cooker was a complete nightmare and after much arguement she was given a full refund.

Just got a Rangemaster and, while I haven't really taxed it, it's been good so far. Nice solid build quality, and some interesting features eg wok burner and griddle.

I've now subscribed to Which to see the range cooker reports as I was set on the John Lewis one too. just dont think I can justify the 1350 for a rangemaster. These ones get good reviews.. anyone any experience of either??
