Have I let a builder walk all over me?

Had work done at the end of last year and the beginning of this, on the cottage we are renovating, to the tune of £14k (new roof, all sorts). Have several new windows put in. One has 'failed' (in that the double glazing is misted up) so the builder has agreed to put a new one in, though that was a couple of months ago. The renovation isn't finished yet, so it was all left a bit casual, and I am confident he will do it. However...I am 7 months pregnant and we are rushing to finish before DD2 is born at end of Sept. Now we have begun painting the window frames, round each pane is lots of bobbly silicon beading which needs cutting off. There are several panes in each window, and far from a quick job with a craft knife, it took two hours to do one window alone. It's a really fiddly, awful job and really we need to be doing other stuff. Think I should tell the builder to come back and do it?? It's a 'standing' job and I just find that so tough at the moment...and he wasn't cheap.

If he's still working on your home, then talk to him when he comes back. It's normal to have a snagging list: if he's a pro, he will sort it out. Give him a deadline for replacing the double-glazed unit as you need to get on with decorating (it's not a big job).

No, he finished in Feb or March and just needs to come back to replace the faulty pane (which I am confident he will do as he said he would).

In that case, he is taking the piss a bit. I would contact him, say you have more concerns about the windows and ask him to come round - set day and time, don't let him say he will pop over on his way somewhere else sometime. Unfortunately, getting builders to come back is a nightmare - generally, persistence is needed.
