so to have a roll top bath do you need a massive bathroom?

Ours is small. We currently have a corner bath which is on its last legs. Taps broken so have to fill te bath wiht the shower head and the panel is cracked. Looking at roll top baths but do they look silly unless they are in the middle of the room? And do you have to have the tall standpipe taps?

I'm lacking inspiration (and budget!)

we have a roll top set in tiled surround so dont see sides or base, is against one short wall in bathroom, taps in middle. A freestanding one would be fine against one wall but do you have a separate shower?

We have a separate shower cubicle (which also needs replacing) and so only need it to work as a bath. If we had the money to spend on the bathroom I'd probably ditch the separate shower and have more space for the bath (since we have a separate shower in the en-suite) but DH is very reluctant to do the bathroom at all so I'm on a very tight budget and don't want to mess about with the plumbing too much.

If it was against the wall wouldn't it be difficult to clean? Can't really picture it!

Go for it.
we had a reclaimed one in our old place against one wall - everyone who saw it loved it and commented upon it.
in fact most visitors asked if they could have a try.

Don't remember the pipes being problem nor the cleaning although you do have to clean underneath.

I think B&Q do one that is squared off at one end to fit against a wall.
