Help with decorating the Nursery

damnmoon · 26/07/2010 23:39

I'm not even supposed to be talking about this yet as DH doesn't want me to do anything with the nursery until the babies here, but... ;-)

I want to at least plan a few bits and bobs.

He'll be doing the painting, but I want to start thinking about the art for the walls.

I don't want the same old run of the mill art - I want something a little different.

Any suggestions? Websites? Shops? Galleries?

TIA!

Etsy? Some gorgeous things if you have time to wade through ....

I was a cheapskate and stole pictures I liked off the internet

I think you mean decals? Stickers are great and you dont want the run of the mill stuff.

Something like this: www.supernice.co.uk/section.php/120/Kids. Loads of similar sites too.

Wall art I chose this for my sons bedroom I saw him at a craft fair and love the feel www.ahayball.co.uk/animals.html

I never had a nursery twice (1st time lived in pokey caravan and now live in 2 bed bungalow so cordened off a sectio of the hallway) So it would be fab.

Also look at fabrics by Voyage & harlequin.

Ooohh like the Sticker decals! Great idea.

I definitely want some traditional art too though. You know framed, and mounted. Something bright maybe.

Keep the ideas coming!!!!

I'm boring and used Fisher Price Rainforest stickers by FunToSee but they are FAB! My DS loves them as they are really bright and have captured his imaginiation. £35 so not a bad price either.

top tip. Keep the walls in neutral everyday avail colours as you'll be patching it up regularly. Especially when they are crawling and toddling. My son at 4 rubs his feet, nose, drink, well everything on the walls.

My 16m old son is also starting to get the walls grubby.

This is why wallpaper isnt such a good idea.

Ikea have some little handy stuff - like the tiny mirrors which you can put at toddler level. Coat pegs also at small level.

Art isnt dear however the mounting and framing can add huge costs.

vertbaudet has some great stuff for nurseries. get the catalogue though as the website doesnt have much on.

How about something like this www.notonthehighstreet.com/modocreative/product/personalised-birth-details-art-print once your baby's born, named etc.

There are lot of other funky prints for children's rooms on www.notonthehighstreet.com plus alphabet friezes by Mrs Booth.

You can always frame really lovely bright wrapping paper - babies love contrast (e.g black /white) and patterns, and there are loads of great wrapping paper sheets with spots, stripes etc on. If you buy nice frames, you can keep ringing the changes as you baby grows, to keep them interested.
Or how about doing that old 'changing rooms' trick of stretching lovely fabric over a frame - fabric shops often have off cuts etc.
Museums like Tate modern have posters of modern art, which would meet your requirements of nice and bright - how about "The Snail' by Henri Matisse? Or make your own snail!

I'd second having a look at the vertbaudet home catalogue - some great ideas. Also Ikea have great room set ups and little storage bits and bobs which can be customised.

Some gorgeous and fun patterns here. Maybe plainish walls and fun soft furnishings ?
