bedroom: teenage girl

I'm desperately looking for ideas for my dd's (14) bedroom. Our ideas are so different. So far she has chosen bright colours - pink and purple. I'm ok with one of these as a feature and hints of the other... but I do want bedding / curtains / accessories etc to match.

HELP!!

How about white/neutral walls with bright but plain bedlinen/curtains/rug, eg in lime or hot pink?
That ways it's easy if you want to change the look as there's no need to re-paint the whole room.

kiwibella · 22/07/2010 17:06

that is the easiest compromise! I will probably choose one colour as a feature wall. Hot pink certainly seems like a fav.

So, do I go ahead and do it as I want... or with some consultation!!!

Her room, should be her choice.

Pannacotta · 22/07/2010 18:04

Oh yes do talk it through with her.
There is a really nice book by Judith WIlson you could borrow from the library for ideas/inspiration

I don't entirely agree CG... yes, she should have some input. The problem - which I must manage better - is that our ideas / opinions clash.

Pannacotta: good suggestion! I didn't think of the library but I'll pay a visit on the weekend

Would you let her tell you how she thought your bedroom was painted?

Whatever colour won't matter when she's covered the walls with posters

DD1's room makes me smile as she has a whole wall of photos of her & friends, just the usual 6x4 ones, I could spend ages looking back as she has photos from first days of secondary to her leavers' prom, with various trips/sports days/mucking about with mates in between.

It is your DD's room, but you have to consider the house as a whole, so try to negotiate a compromise as per the posts above, and point out that her tastes may change so perhaps she doesn't want it all bright colours just in case.

kiwibella · 23/07/2010 18:03

thanks housemum... my dd has similar photos except they are in big multiple frames. Good point about whatever we choose being covered anyways . She recently put her first poster up.

I guess I am deciding for longevity and she is choosing what she likes now. We are in a new build property but I've held off doing her room until last because she has changed her ideas so many times. We stretched ourselves when we moved in here to buy her the bedroom furniture that she wanted... yet, a year down the track, she wants to update it already.

If only she could pay for it all... she can do what she wants!

My DD is 13 and hates the bubblegum pink room that she adored just a few months ago.

We have together chosen some pale blue and white wallpaper with a sort of delft pottery design on it!(Toile de jouy?) and she has picked a plain white antique style quilt and a lovely old fashioned white mirror.

Sort of like this; link

I do think by 14 you should let them do pretty much what they want to, with the exceptions of colours that will make the room miserably dark which I'd argue is not good for health. It is a time of getting a sense of who you are and who you are becoming and being able to express that in the one space that is your own is important. At least you can just shut the door on it if you don't like it unlike a living room. And at the end of the day, it doesn't really take that long to repaint.

I love the paper Serin... thanks for the link, I'll have a good look through.

I do agree that it's dds room and her choice, per say!!

We went for hotpink and white when DD was approaching teens. She hated it a couple of years later and went for cream with black and white curtains/bedding. Just a splash of colour in a couple of wall prints. It looks nice and grown up.
