Colour for north facing bathroom

Trying to decide what colour to paint our north facing bathroom but struggling to find out whether you are supposed to go for a cool colour or a warm one. Does anyone know which one it is supposed to be?

North facing will be cooler and darker than most other bits of the house. So, ts natural light will be bluey-grey. This means you'll want to warm it up. Warm creams would work nicely and stay neutral. Or you could go for something with a more orange/yellow/red tone if you want to be daring. Steer clear of blues, lilacs, greys and most shades of white unless they have a yellow base.

Thanks - that does help a lot

I think it very much depends on size of window - we had north-facing rooms at our last house but the windows were very large and no trees/other houses obstructing them so the rooms were a lot sunnier than the east-facing rooms in our current home.

I have painted my north facing bedroom a sort of latte colour (it's Crown Wildwood) and that has made a huge difference in terms of warming it up. When I moved here it was painted a pale lemon yellow which was dreadful because it was a cold shade of yellow rather than warm.

I wanted to say, a warm rose colour, but appreciate that not everyone wants a pink bathroom! Not sure I would, really. I think LB's warm latte colour sounds best - classy and up-to-date, and very warm.

Off to look at the Crown colour charts...

.... had a look at the Wildwood which would go quite well with the beige fleck in the tiles. The bathroom is currently a powder blue and it is quite large and light. House was last decorated in the 1960's (we've been there a couple of months) so a lot of it is painted what my DH charmingly describes as "dysentery beige" so he is reluctant to have anything approaching the brown spectrum. I have a hankering for a lilac colour but trying to find the right colour is proving hard.

anything Farrow and Ball would look lovely. Choose a warmish shade of whatever you like, and you won't be disappointed. Tis the very best paint around. It's here www.Farrow-Ball.com

Am trying to convert everyone I know

I have F&B in a lot of my house funnys but I wouldn't use it in a kitchen or bathroom personally. I don't think it's designed for use in rooms that can get damp is it?

funnysinthegarden · 21/07/2010 08:10

oooh yes, LB. I have String in my kitchen and it is fine. No problems with it being in a kitchen at all. It's the normal estate emulsion. Would be fine in a bathroom too I think. There is a type that you can get which is 'wipe clean'. That would be fine in a bathroom even if estate emulsion is too porous.

I love F&B and practically everything in our house and garden has been F&B'd at some point.........
