Finding somewhere to rent

Where we aren't going to have to deal with idiots.

We've just been told that our rented flat is going to be sold and that the LL wants us out as soon as possible.

Except, this isn't what we were told at first. What we were told was that our LL thought we were too untidy and wanted us out.

Bearing in mind that he's never been in our flat, so wouldn't know how tidy it was or wasn't.

So it would be really good to live somewhere where we get told the truth not a random collection of lies. (These are just the latest lies - you should hear the ones about fixing a leaky gas meter)

To complicate matters we are on HB due to disability.

Does anyone know where to look or can advise us on letting agents/landlords to trust? Right now we don't know where to look, and are panicking as all our savings have gone on our wedding (2 months time), DP finds out tomorrow at a tribunal whether he is considered disabled enough (M.E and long term mental health issues) and I am now potentially pregnant.

We are currently living in Markyate nr St Albans. With family in N. London and Berkshire, though we're also looking around Brighton (Saltdean through to Shoreham). So down south ideally.

Any help much appreciated, even if it's just handholding.

Can't cope with much more of this.

local council?? do they run the rent assist thing?

GypsyMoth · 12/07/2010 17:35

bumping for you!!

Thankyou whitecherry. Only moved into this flat 4 months ago, so unimpressed at flat hunting again.

I can't find anything about rent assist apart from about HB, which we are already on.

no,not every council runs that scheme. its basically borrowing the deposit/rent advance and getting a list of landlords who are happy to take hb.

what about places you plan to go to? i suspect the further south the more expensive it gets!!

really feel for you- we had this when i rented somewhere. agent told me that people were looking to rent it out long term-agents told them we were looking to rent short- term. so they upset both of us just to get us into the property. Would I have rented somewhere when i was 6 months pregnant and have to move again with a 3 month old baby????

i think that you should write out a plan about what you are going to do- especially in light of DPs problems. it helps avoid the panic. Start with citizens advice to see if they can offer any info about rent assist in your area. worth asking family and friends if they know any one with a place to rent- it does happen sometimes.
