Does anyone have a membership card and shop regularly at Costco??

I have been given an application form through work and it's £25 for the annual fee.

Is it worth it? Do you actually save that much buying in bulk?

I am a member
it is easy to get caarried away there as the prices shown are without VAt, so when you get to the till it is a bit of a shock, I spent £180 on my first visit.
I buy washing products and dishwaher tabs, you can get 4 boxes of Persil gel tablets for about £13.
Dont know if you save a great deall but it is quite an experience as they sell EVERYTHING!
They do good party food platters if you are an entertaining type of person!

silverfrog · 27/02/2009 18:29

I'm a member too.

Useful for things like washing powder/dishwasher tabs and loo rols.

they do lovely danish pastries, and muffins, but alas only in large mutlipacks ('tis a hardship to eat them

I've found quite a few nice books for the dds, and manuka honey is quite cheap (2 jars for £11 iirc)

but yes, it is a great experience walking around

Timbuktu · 27/02/2009 19:57

I have a membership card, would definitely recommend taking one. It's true you can get seriously carried away there though. You can get lovely fruit and veg - huge avocadoes and the most beautiful cherry vine tomatoes. I got a pair of diesel jeans for £25 as well once and packs of books for dd for a tenner. Good deals on cases of wine as well.

reban · 28/02/2009 14:33

you def can get carried away and i do seem to spend over £100 every time i go , but then im buying 6 months worth of kitchen roll, loo roll, tissues and stuff like that. They also do promotions where you get discounts off certain products for a week, which is always worth it if you use those products. My advice is take a calculator and read the lables careful because it shows price with and without VAT .. also they dont accept credit cards

tkband3 · 28/02/2009 14:41

Like the others say it is easy to get carried away. It's also worth doing a bit of research before you go, because a lot of the branded stuff they sell is not much cheaper than the own-brand stuff you might buy in Sainsburys or Tesco. For example, I used to buy Pampers nappies in Costco, but found that the Tesco own-brand ones were just as good and about the same price. You do need to have storage space as they only sell in bulk, so you would buy 5 packs of 9 loo rolls at a time.

I always get stuck at the books section and nearly always end up buying a box set for my DDs .

It's particularly fun at Christmas - they sell amazing Christmas decorations and presents. And the cookies are too delicious .

MrsMcCluskey · 28/02/2009 17:17

I nearly ended up buying a kayak when I went in there last week.
Dont need one but it did look good.

Eddas · 01/03/2009 07:40

my parents used to own a shop and went to costc, I used to love wandering round with them

They sell allsorts of things. I once fell in love with a gorgeous wooden climbing frame My garden is postage stamp sized though so wouldn't have fitted

I thought they put the VAT inclusive price in tiny print at the bottom of the price tag?

I also thought about getting a card once, do you know anyone that also wants to join, you could go 50:50 if you would go together as you're allowed to take one(or is it 2) people in with you on your card. Just a thought!

WriggleJiggle · 01/03/2009 07:52

Costco is good for getting branded goods cheaply, but if you are used to buying supermarket brands (like us), then tis probably not any cheaper. I costed out the meats for a huge bbq last year, and mostly it was cheaper to go to Asda. The danish pastries are great though.

CuddleHuggle · 01/03/2009 15:15

Hmm, might go and ask for a browse first. I spoke to a friend last night who told me he buys his "nacho cheese in a tin" which sounds ..........

Thanks for your inputs!

Yes

It's so worth it.

We can easily save much more than that in one trip.

snigger · 01/03/2009 18:39

ROFL at Mrs McCluskey and the kayak - DH gets 'Costco Madness' too - our nearest miss was an all-terrain buggy which could apparently have been indispensable for the price - this was in our Victorian terrace years, mind, long before we moved into the great green yonder.

It's like a red mist - I'm terrified they're going to get the night vision goggles back into stock, he was determined to have those.

lizziemun · 01/03/2009 19:17

I have membership through my sisters company.

The only advice i would give is to check prices and sizes and compare with 'normal' supermarkets and Costco.

I tend to buy

Washing powder#
conditioner
dishwasher tablets
cleaning products
meat.

Flutterbye · 05/03/2009 16:58

I think it's def worth it for their car tyres (yes I said car tyres), tv's and kitchen appliances.

twinflowers · 05/03/2009 19:53

MrsMcCluskey, you are so funny, made me giggle for ages, xxx

BriansAmazingBeard · 14/03/2009 19:26

thing we find is the quality of the meat and fish and veg is amazing,

for example a big bag of frozen chicken breasts (no added water or other such shite) are £10 and you get 12 individually wrapped breasts so dead easy to just use what you need and keep the rest for another day,

thier steaks are brilliant, not cheap, but very good value and excellent quality,

we always buy cans of coke/pepsi, beer and wine is good, the party food is fab, cakes are to die for, the fresh made pies and tray bake pizzas are great too,

fairimum · 21/03/2009 21:52

We love it!!!

Best thing we get are the bonless chicken thighs - we were getting the breasts but the thighs taste lovely, not much fat on them and you get loads for £13 we had enough for about 10 meals for 2 of us! Also get the pork chops - they are huge and we cut them in half through the middle so are normal sized - makes them great value, espically when got a £3 off voucher! Mince beef is so yummy too.

We brought our tumble dryer there was £50 less that could even get online, also a sony laptop - had a problem with it and just took it in and they swopped for a new one, no questions at all...

umm dry cat food is very cheap and the cats love it! Their own brand nappies are good - although we have been getting the huggies with their voucher £21 a box - voucher is buy 2 boxes, get £14 off so works out about 7p a nappy depending on size - so not too bad! Also huggies wipes in boxes of 6 for about £4.50, voucher is buy 2 boxes get one free - so around 50p a pack!

We love going for lunch, the jacket potatos are yummy and £1.50 for huge filled one!!

MrsMcCluskey · 21/03/2009 22:00

But did you buy the kayak?
Took DS1 with me last time, he loved it.
Bought himself a box of 60 'Freddo's', wanted to take them into school to sell for profit.
I love their enchiladas from the chiller.

Yes i Love it too.

Their bacon is LOVELY and a lot cheaper than supermarkets.

We always eat in the cafe or take a pizza away. They do a huge hot dog and a refillable drink for about £1 or something stupid!

Their hot food counters are good for ribs and chicken etc. We used to always get the 2 racks of ribs for £5 although the price has gone up a bit now and the sauce has changed so we don't bother.

Excellent place to go if you are having a big do. We are having our DDs christened in the summer and will be going for that defiantly.

baytree11 · 26/03/2009 14:25

i've got one. I dont think 'costco' is really that cheap for me becos there are only me, DH and DD ( 4months) so i think unless you have a big family, that you save a bit becos its rather hard for me to buy 'shit loads' when i know i can never finish using them. However, i wear contact lens and the 'solution' i use i can get it from costco far far far cheaper than anywhere so it actually saves me more than £25 per year ...so its good for me.
