Now is a really bad time for savings, sorry, but have a look at this, it might have some useful info.

I put all of our savings into my sons account - the halifax pay 2.5% interest on a yearly basis?

Not sure anywhere is offering any decent rates for savings at the moment.

ICICI Bank is the most consistent for high interest according to the Sunday Times Money section. It is an Indian bank but it is covered by the FSA. They have a savings account that is still ok for interest and is instant access. The only way to get good interest in a British bank at the moment is to have a fized term deal which is not what you want.

Check www.moneysupermarket.com for the best savings accounts. Also Martin Lewis' www.moneysavingsexpert.com gives you the low-down on the best savings accounts.

You could try the account from Lloyds which is a regular saver...ie you need to deposit each month at least £25 but you can have unlimited withdrawals. Only paying about 2.55% though. Unfortunately the accounts with the best interest rates have conditions where you can't touch your money or you will be penalised.
