I went for a browse in my local HUGE Oxfam this morning and ended up getting 4 jumpers (next etc..) 3 going out tops, 1 pair of moleskin trousers, 2 leather belts, a scarf for MIL (new xmas pressie) and 3 pairs of boys jeans (good as new) all for £23. The tops were on offer half price so £1.49 each.

Clothes are all washed and hanging. I let the tops drip dry a bit outside as they were hand wash and one's dry already,I tried it on and it's gorgeous

Our charity shops are getting more expensive. The average price of ladies clothes seems to be £3.50 to £4.50 per item and we are not talking about Next stuff here just Primark etc.

littlelamb · 21/12/2008 15:48

Last week I got dd a brand new Boden knitted dress and a gorgeous stripey Habitat rug for the hall for the grand total of £4.65. O and yesterday we found some fabulous dressing up clothes- had dd not been with me they would have been perfect for Christmas. She got Ariel and Belle for £2.00 each. I looooove the charity shops here

JumpingJingleBellsDizzy · 21/12/2008 17:41

I'm in North Wiltshire and we have 8 charity in our small market town. One has just shut up shop as the lease was up for renewal and the landlord wanted to up it by £30k a year and they decided that was too much. I am an avid charity shop shopper and have noticed over the last 6 months that the prices have been creeping up among all the charity shops and they seem to be charging roughly the same in all of them.

chloemegjess · 22/12/2008 15:26

I have nothing against charity shops, but unfortunatly, most of them round here are far too expensive. They are overpriced and can get cheaper else where. Which annoys me when they are turning away bags of perfectly good stuff!

JumpingJingleBellsDizzy · 22/12/2008 18:13

Are they turning stuff away? My hairdresser said today that a client works in a hospice one and they're hard up for clothes. I was wearing all charity stuff apart from undies and my new coat today that's why we got talking. My boots were from one but new and leather for £3.

I've got some of the DCs presents from charity shops:

books - from 20p each
a big plastic tractor - 75p
cuddly Pilchard (from Bob the Builder) - 29p
and so on.

Love them and will go in them more and more i think for kids stuff especially.
I've always got myself books from them.
Got some the other day that i have to admit are rubbish and will go straight back! but no guilt at 50p each

MrsMattie · 22/12/2008 18:31

I find my local charity shops extortionately expensive.

littlelamb · 22/12/2008 18:34

I've got soem of dd's presents from charity shops too. She found a couple of old style Polly Pockets in one a few months ago and I found some more in one when she was at preschool, so they will be going in her stocking I think with many people being put off ebay (I certainly am after having been messed around by too many people on there, and the increased sellers fees) it may become more common again to find great stuff in charity shops as I certainly can't be bothered with the hassle of listing, posting and so on. So much easier to bag it all up and take it down to the shop.

chloemegjess · 22/12/2008 19:50

if they were those prices I would be in there every week!

Yes they are all turning away stuff round here, all signs up saying "NO MORE DONATIONS" etc and people often dump stuff outside. I used to live above one and they amount of good stuff they threw away was shocking and I have never given anything to a charity shop since.
