Shoppers Discounts

Posted in Legal/Money but thought maybe it had more of a place here.

On checking our recent cc statement it seems that when we booked a hotel via Expedia we had received a discount of £10 but what we didn't realise was that by accepting this we had signed up for membership to Shopper Discounts who have subsequently debited £8 a month since July for the privilege of receiving more "offers" by email. These emails look like many other promotions.

We have now cancelled but our initial £10 saving has cost us £16 . Just thought I'd alert anyone who may have similarly overlooked cancelling before their free 30 day "trial" ended or perhaps signed up without realising that they could access you details and continue to charge.

I had similar with an ancestry site. Charged me £80 after a 'free trial period'. I didn't read the small print.

The same thing happened to me when I booked an Easyjet flight back in March 2007, I clicked on a "£10 off your next flight " offer,I'm ashamed to admit I didn't read the small print, or notice regular monthly £8 p.o.s. payments to shopperdiscounts.co leaving my current account from April (there was a 30 day "free" trial).I had paid with my debit card, and when I spoke to my bank they said that they could not block these payments as I had authorised them. To the best of my knowledge I had not, but I found on the Money Saving Expert website loads of people who had done exactly the same thing. I phoned the company on their freephone number and they explained that by giving my email address twice I was giving my electronic signature, and they had emailed me details and benefits of my membership at the time . I had never received this, as it probably went straight into my spam. They agreed to repay three months fees immediately, which they have done, and I am now waiting for a claim form to try and recoup the other 7 payments. I accept responsibility for my own carelessness, but feel that Easyjet had no right to share my bank details without asking for them again. I feel very vulnerable now, and want to warn as many people as possible about this, although I realise that this business is not exactly illegal, but I wonder just how many people are having small sums regularly leaving their accounts without noticing?

I have also just found out that I too have been duped by this company. This was through an order I placed at lookfantastic.com where it asked if I wanted £15 off my next order. I only discovered it today as I was looking to see if there were any discount codes for Interflora.

Doubtless this organisation will shortly come along & post the following:

"We have come across this forum and would like the opportunity to answer your questions or address your concerns about our membership program, Shopper Discounts & Rewards.

I am really hacked off as a company I have used for years has sold my bank details in this way. I will not be shopping at lookantastic again.
