Family travel on a budget – what actually works?

I don’t know if anyone else feels like this, but planning a family trip seems to get more stressful (and more expensive) every year. By the time you’ve added flights, meals and activities, the hotel bill always feels like the tipping point.
We’ve been thinking about a short break in Spain during half-term, but when I started looking at hotel prices, they were higher than I expected. For a family of four, even fairly standard rooms in a good location can be a real stretch.
The other night I came across ZenHotels while comparing options. I hadn’t used them before, but I noticed some of the rates were lower than on the big booking sites. One hotel we had our eye on was almost £80 cheaper, which for us would easily cover an extra family day out or two.
Has anyone else booked through ZenHotels?I’m tempted to try it, but would love to hear if others have had good experiences before I commit.

I actually used Zenhotels when I was traveling in Europe last year. At first, I wasn’t sure if it was legit since I hadn’t booked with them before, but it turned out fine — the place I stayed at was exactly as shown and cheaper than what I found on Booking. Later I realized they often have discount codes (found mine here https://discountcodes.hotdeals.com/brands/zenhotels.com) and it saved me a decent chunk. Just thought I’d share in case it helps anyone else.

Travel is getting so pricey, it’s a bit of a joke really. By the time you’ve sorted flights and food, the hotel costs just tip it over the edge. I haven’t tried ZenHotels either but saving £80 sounds worth looking into – that’s basically a whole extra day out with the kids. If Spain ends up feeling a bit much, places like Portugal or even somewhere in Eastern Europe (Croatia, Poland, Prague) can be a lot better value and still really family-friendly.

Family trips on a budget? Honestly, it’s tough. Flights shoot up during school breaks, “cheap” airlines nickel-and-dime you, and hotels cost a fortune. What actually helps is road trips, packing your own snacks, and staying somewhere with a kitchen so you don’t eat out every meal. The best stuff is usually free anyway—parks, beaches, wandering around. In the end, it’s less about ticking off sights and more about laughing at the chaos and making memories.

We booked through ZenHotels last summer when we did a week in Portugal and honestly it was fine – the hotel had our booking on arrival, no hiccups at all. Like you, I was a bit wary at first because the price was noticeably cheaper than Booking.com, but it worked out well and we saved enough to cover a couple of nice meals out with the kids.
One thing I’d suggest is checking for codes before you book – I’ve used this page before: https://discountcodes.hotdeals.com/brands/zenhotels.com. Sometimes they’ve had an extra percentage off on top of the already lower rates, which made the deal even better. Definitely worth a look if you’re trying to stretch the budget for a family trip.

I totally hear you! Family trips do seem to get more expensive every year, don’t they? Flights, meals, activities… it all adds up so quickly. And then when you throw in the hotel costs, it can feel like you’re just throwing money into a black hole. Have you tried looking for family deals or booking things like activities in advance to save a bit? Sometimes there are hidden gems if you can be flexible with dates or destinations too!
