A blatant plug but if anyone is thinking of opening a GoHenry account for their child, then I have a code for you to use which will automatically put £10 into your account.

I was actually thinking of shifting my DD's account now that she's 17 but I may hang on to it until she's 18. It's a great start up account and you can monitor/control all spending.

PM me if you'd like the code. The offer ends this weekend.

You have your 17 yr old using gohenry? And you're hanging on till 18! Wow. You're massively controlling. They should have their own bank account in their own control years ago.

Go Henry has a monthly fee I think but HyperJar is identical and free.

sleepawakesleep · 18/11/2023 02:29

Just open them a proper bank account, especially at 17!

BastardtheCat · 18/11/2023 08:39

Thanks for your input everyone.

How controlling to have a 17yo on a GoHenry card.

Rooster via NatWest, RDS and Ulster Bank is free if you have an account.

Hyperjar is also free.

Papillon23 · 18/11/2023 08:44

Goodness, I remember going to the bank to set up a new account at just turned 13 because my building society didn't offer debit cards to under 16s but the alternative place (that I found and researched) offered them from 13.

My parents didn't get my bank statements or anything by then.

Sugarfree23 · 18/11/2023 08:47

@Papillon23 exactly! At 12 I had a bank account with cashline card in my own name.
I've kept my 12 Yr on a pocket money card mainly due to the paying by card aspect but I'm sure in another year or so I'll get him a bank account in his own name.

BastardtheCat · 18/11/2023 10:41

Yes, thanks again for your input.
No idea of my 17 yr olds situation and like every other MN'er we don't disclose everything.

I only wanted to pass on a code to benefit both parties (am short of cash) which is why I posted in Money Matters, not in AIBU or Chat.

No matter. As you were.

I'm sure op doesn't care what you do with your kids. There's no need to be rude.

I just switched from GoHenry to NatWest and DD has spent £200 on doughnuts in a month so if she feels the need to observe spending, there may be a reason. It's not always about control and maybe your mind has gone there for some reason...
