Buying an expensive watch

So I enquired today in goldsmiths about a watch for my husband's upcoming big birthday. I think I would be happy to spend up to £1300 and told her this when I asked. She immediately showed me a watch at £1650 and said if I paid cash she would do it for £1350!

I'm no good at haggling, I have never purchased anything like this before and wonder if I could get the original watch I liked at a better price? I liked one at £1250 so if I went to another shop and said my budget was £1000 could I maybe get the original one for a bit cheaper? Is this bad? Is this the done thing??

Or if I'm getting such a bargain do I go for the more expensive watch for the budget price?

Does paying by credit card count as a cash sale?

FWIW - I have the cash for it but want to protect the purchase by paying by 0% interest CC then paying it off. It's something I have saved a long time for, for a special birthday and this is a big purchase for me.

No of course not, cash is cash, you know, paper money.

However there is nothing wrong with haggling.

I asked for a discount when I bought my expensive watch. I’d seen it online a bit cheaper and I just asked them what their best price would be and they knocked a couple of hundred quid off without batting an eyelid. I guess they must expect it.

Jupiter13 · 23/01/2019 19:01

What make and model was the watch?

LittleMe03 · 23/01/2019 19:02

If you give us the watch details somebody might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere?

caffeinebuzz · 23/01/2019 19:08

Cash means cash, but a reputable seller should still provide warranty and protection over your purchase provided you keep all the paperwork.

The handful of times I've bought watches of this kind of value the best price has always been at the airport, if you will be flying before then. You can call ahead so they can make sure the one you want is in stock.

Good idea about the airport, have never thought to look even tho I fly all the time!

I thought CC would maybe count as cash sale for the jeweller as they aren't giving me finance and would be happier to give me discount as its money in their till effectively?

I'll need to get my big girl pants on and try to haggle this one! It's a tag heuer im looking for. Something chronograph and a decent face. Metal strap

I bought my tag at rhe airport, however airport concessions are less likely to haggle than an jndependant jeweller.

And no a cash sale is a cash sale. It means no bank charges or credit card fees are paid and rhe merchant, cough, doesn't have to declare all of it, so will pay less tax.

So cash is literally cash.

Depending on where you are, there is a tag outlet at Bicester that might be worth checking out.

rolex142 · 24/01/2019 07:45

Good to know bluntness coz I really thought it meant cash in their till and just no finance.

I'm nowhere near Bicester, I'll go back in for a look. I hadn't considered to be haggling so I'll pay full price if I need to

Thanks for all the help
