Brussels for dyslexic kids

Hello everyone who has experience of Brussels schools: we have a possibility of moving to Brussels soon with our 3 DC. The oldest DS (11years) is dyslexic and we understand that schools in Brussels are behind the U.K. when dealing with dyslexic learning. We cannot afford the international schools, unfortunately, as that would be the easy choice. Has anyone had experience with other good providers or alternative ways of getting through exams etc? Thanks for your insights!

Hey I live in Belgium (not Brussels but did live there for 3 years and I’m now in Flanders). Belgium is complicated and supports/process will change depending on if you send the kids to a French speaking school or Dutch etc. You’re best bet to find information is on the regional government websites. Feel free to send me a PM if you want additional info on this topic or on any others moving here!

Thanks chocolateaddict999. Our dyslexic child is at a bilingual (French/english) school in the Uk but we find the French system quite backward when dealing with dyslexia. We are happy to send him to an independent/ paying/“homeschooling” school as long as it’s not too expensive for us.

Unfortunately, the options in Belgium are either the public school system or in the international fee paying schools which are not cheap. ‘Homeschooling’ schools are not done here and homeschooling can be done but the regulations around it are very strict. For kids that need extra help/resources initially the 1st assessment is done by the school so perhaps when you are researching schools you can reach out to them directly to see what supports they do have available once the initial assessment is complete. There are also private tutors you can hire to help outside of school.

Thanks everyone. I’ve heard that some schools like the ACE school in Brussels is classed as a “home school” and covers dyslexic teaching. Does anyone have experience of it? We saw another (private) school that said dyslexia “does not exist” and that none of their students have ever had it!
