West London secondary schools with a creative focus, less competitive entry?

As the title says - I have a Y4 daughter and starting to explore secondary school options. After speaking with her teacher today, she lands in the 3rd quartile of her class... not at the bottom, but not at the top half either.

Looking for suggestions of West London secondary schools that are not as competitive that we should be looking at. I was really hoping she would get into Francis Holland as that is nearby and a lovely school, but really is not looking likely. She loves ballet, performing arts, and music. Definitely more of a creative/left brained child.

Some of the schools I'm considering are St. Margaret's in Hampstead, though it seems quite small, or South Hampstead High School, More House School or St Marylebone CE School (though after seeing the % of students who got accepted this year it is seeming like that would be total luck of the draw and not something to count on). What others would you recommend I add to my list to visit over the next few months?

Queenswood for a creative child - lots going on. There’s transport from the area you are talking about and they also offer flexi boarding.

South Hampstead is academic so probably not a good fit. It’s more academic than the FH schools.
More House is quite nurturing but it’s very small.
Queen’s College could be good fit. It similar in terms of academics with the FH schools but are not super selective and are strong in performing arts (dance especially).
Channing also could be a good fit if willing to travel a little further out. A bit more academic than QC and FH schools but less so than SHHS but has a brilliant drama department.

Queen's College, FH RP and Channing are equally academically selective. Have you looked at Queens Gate or Thomas's?

nomoreforks · 19/03/2026 16:04

Thomas's in Richmond has had good feedback and is more focused on developing th child rather than pure academics.

St Augustine’s Priory Ealing, St Catherine’s Twickenham, St James Olympia?

Echo suggestions - I have a friend with daughters at Queens Gate - good academics, strong on art/performing art. Super confident girls. Good transport links if that’s important

I was going to suggest Queens Gate too if FHSS is near you or Woldingam and commute out?

Putney High

No, Queen's College does not have a selective recruitment process, and their staff retention rate is notably poor.

St James girls in Olympia (will be coed by the time your daughter reaches secondary)

chickpea4 · 06/04/2026 20:06

Appreciate all these responses - I am going to definitely add Queens Gate to my list. We are in W9, lovely primaries but not great for secondary! Anything on Circle/District/Hammersmith and city is fine as an easy walk to Paddington.

Probably too far for you, but St Chris in Letchworth very much fits this bill. There is flexi boarding as well.
