Our DD has offer from Wimbledon high and Guildford High - quandary what to choose as she likes both. advise pls ?

The DD in question:
She absolutely adores Anything involving drama, debating, or holding court—she’s front and centre.
She’s terribly keen and competitive, though perhaps more of a 'solid B-team' player
it’s the extracurriculars that really put the wind in her sails.

Depends where you live - how close are you to both? . Logistics are key especially when she is probably getting on a train home using London road train station (which sometimes has big issues). Plus the matches midweek for you to pick up / drop off and on a weekend too. It’s quite a commitment if your daughter is into sport.

A B player there are some really exceptionally strong girls who are surrey county players the competition for teams increases massively compared to the prep schools.

Go for logistics and it depends if you work / how many siblings etc. Don’t make it hard for yourself. Plus parties in the middle of nowhere in the depths of surrey at 10/11pm pick ups. All the extra driving doesn’t seem much but when there are several pick ups each week I’d pick the school closest to your home as they are both excellent schools.

We are roughly in the middle at Epsom so train to both locations

My advice would be to go for the closer school. Guildford High school is a wonderful school, but that’s a tough commute to be doing every day for a child. You’ll also find yourself driving to Guildford a lot over the years for various things - sports fixtures, school events, parents evenings, problems on the trains, etc etc. If you like both schools - go for the one that is logistically easier.

Which can you get to easiest without public transport for early starts, late nights for Drama etc etc? Logistics every time. The drama, debating etc will be fine at both schools.

I see WHS more well connected though both GHS and WHS have train connectivity for early start and late finish or even weekend plays from where we live in Epsom . GHS continues to top the school ranking charts (top 5) while WHS is among top 50 ...wondering if there is actually such a big gap

Wouldn’t worry too much about the rankings. They can vary year on year. A level results were great at WHS last year but their GCSE results were a bit lower than usual. It can change a lot year on year.

Will your DD be travelling against or with office commuters for each of the schools? She’s more likely to get a seat both ways if she’s travelling against the office crowd.

Slightly different perspective that may be unpopular to be said here.

There is not a huge amount of difference across these private schools outside of academia, but at the end of the day, there will be a difference in how each strives for excellence and considers what is best. Could come from peer group, school or parent body - anything that contributes to shaping the unique culture of the school. The expectations and bar set would differ for a 'typical' girl in GHS vs WHS.

It's why parents go for the top schools.. It's the same logic as 'the bright child will do well wherever they go' which I do not believe in.

Why would this be unpopular? You haven’t really said anything substantive! If you think one is better than the other, why not just say!

Is this based on your own experience or more generic life lesson ?
