How much to budget for private secondary

I wondered if anyone had a good model of how much to budget for private secondary school? Looking at sending child from yr7 - yr 13 and can see the current fees but wondered what sort of % increase I should allow for each year. Obviously some big rises with VAT in recent years but not sure of what to expect/plan going forward. Will also consider lunches/travel costs/trips.

To be completely safe, given the current economic situation and how it's not improving, I would assume at least 10% increase each year. Better to be safe than sorry as it'll probably be less...but better to prepare for the worse than hope for the best when it comes to a child's education.

I'd also budget up to 2k per year for extras. It's surprising how many 1k a time school trips they have.

10% increase a year, at least 2x full uniform costs, £2-3k a year for extras, trips etc, some schools have different levels of fees as you go through the school. Costs of school bus if this is likely to be used or bus pass/ train fares.

Will go up by at least 50% from y7 to y13.

Talk to the school’s bursar.

When my dd went it was at least a 5% raise on fees every year.
This increased by A LOT in sixth form though!

Where are you in the country? When my first DC was born, I looked up fees. £12k a year. They’re £32k now. He’s 14…

Our private primary has gone up 26% in just shy of 2 years - cheers Labour

Plus some schools charge extra per gcse.

It depends what school and where in the country you are. I personally budget £30K a year for fees and add £6K for schools and trips etc. so £3K a month. I have a spreadsheet.

4 years prep school, I was anticipating £70K (without extras). I’ve just worked it out now and I think it has been an extra £10K than budget - but remember there’s been VAT.

It is a lot of money a month. I had a year’s fees saved in the bank and saved another year’s fees during prep school.

I would budget for secondary and university (assuming I pay it all) between £250-300K.

5-10% annual increases, 10% pa for extras like trips, lunches, bus, y12/13 fees may be higher, gcse/A level exam fees, uniform £500 to start if new and from specific outlet although there may be a nearly new sale of outgrown items plus at least £100 pa to update or for new/lost pieces(PE kit often changes)

We've been at the school 2 1/2 years now, in that time it's risen 36% from the fees at the start of year 1 to the fees in year 3 of seniors. A large chunk of that is VAT but it's still an eyewatering increase.

Dontknowwhereisit · 12/02/2026 21:55

agree with all the above - 7-10% a year on fees + at least £2k for trips + £££ for clubs / lessons / lunches. Based on that our secondary fees will go from around £36k to £54k between y7 - y13 which is insane.

We are also aiming for at least 2 years saved to guard against any unforeseen financial blips during gcse years so we wouldn’t have to pull them out.

Funkylights · 13/02/2026 00:30

In my area budget £35k a year plus 5-10%
