I have applied for my son at esms and the assessment will be in Jan 2026. The school say there is no need to prep for this. Does anyone have any experience of this for their children in the last couple of years who can shed any light on what the assessment consists of/ what to expect?

Thanks

For what it's worth (we aren't at the school but I know people who are) the assessment for P1 is more of a formality, and it's a pretty relaxed experience more about selling the school to you than the other way around

From what I remember it was things like

Show a tray with a list of items, ask the child to look and try to remember the items. Cover it with a tea towel, take one away and ask them what’s gone.

Writing name

Cutting a trace pattern with scissors

following some multi step instructions - like please go to that table pick up the blue pen, and do to that table and put it in the yellow box then go and sit on that chair.

Think some basic colour identification.

They are not expected to be able to read, write or do sums or anything.
