Does anyone have any experience of this school? I'm interested in both prep and senior?

Which town? We don’t know where they are!

WhiteAmericanoNoSugar · 23/10/2025 21:18

sorry, St Albans, Hertfordshire.

I’m local and hear mixed things. I know someone very unhappy with how bullying was (not) dealt with in the prep, class sizes have risen and there is much less TA support than there used to be.

Also, almost 45% of kids there have SEN so you’d need to consider whether that’s right for your child. And if your child has SEN, are they actually going to provide the necessary support (see above re TAs).

The ISI inspection report was published last week and failed them in a number of areas, though the school is quite angry about this (judging by the letter it sent to parents) and disagrees with the findings.

We looked round the prep and the senior school - despite people saying the school is “not that religious” and don’t be put off (I didn’t want a religious school) we got the impression that it was very religious. But obviously for some people that’s a selling point.

Sorry, that all sounds very negative! A neighbour’s son went there and while it’s a few years ago since he left they were very happy with it. But the only other family we know there is hoping to move their kids to more academic schools for secondary, and a number of the Y6s (at least half a dozen) left last year for the same reason.

I wouldn’t waste my money

Thank you so much for that info.

I have toured both the prep and senior. I constantly heard the words 'academically able' as the type who would suit the school.

I didn't get a good feeling about the prep. My children are v academic, v well behaved but autistic and need high standards of behaviour but also understanding of pastoral needs, especially being vulnerable to bullying as they don't answer back to those who are unkind to them.

I met some 'brothers' on the tour and didn't get who they were or what they were there.

My eldest just left, joined in year 9 from another local prep school. He doesn’t have SEND and is very well behaved, not a single negative behaviour mark in 5 years, as a 6th former he was a prefect and mentor. He was there on an academic scholarship and got excellent gcse and a level results. He’s now at his first choice uni. He made some lovely friends who are also hard working, well mannered, confident young people. He was involved in music, drama, mentoring younger year groups in maths and football and charity work. He did not encounter bullying but that is a matter of luck. There was some staff turn over in his gcse years in some subjects. New head started relatively recently that ds really rated.

They rarely attended mass, there is a family mass every so often (before school), we never attended. In 5 years, I attended once, the leavers mass. The majority of pupils are not catholic though there is a catholic ethos, so long as you are respectful. I have experience of other indies in the area and there is as much religion in all of them. Ds rarely encountered the brothers. I would say a holistic approach.

It has been going co-ed over the last few years. As with other indies, the increase in fees will be affecting numbers. If you’re from the area you’ll know that there are good state schools as well as other indies, I’d imagine those families in year 6 will be very much considering their options. My youngest just left another local indie and a large number of her year group have joined the school for 6th form.

WhiteAmericanoNoSugar · 24/10/2025 18:48

Ah, that's lovely for your son. Right now, I'd be shocked if my children weren't bullied as they just are so quiet and vulnerable. So, we need a school to be strict on stamping out anything like that. We aren't local and would have to move further out to attend most of the independents in Hertfordshire. Would you mind DM-ing me to let me know which indie you left for this school? It would be helpful! Thank you.

@katgab could I ask what the mix of girls and boys is in the senior school (not 6th form). Finding it hard to tell but it still looks majority boys, is that right??

katgab · 29/10/2025 21:09

@Jazzsax - I would say it’s still mostly boys in the senior school though I think all senior year groups are now co-ed.

In Y6 I believe there are 8 girls (out of c.45?). The admissions people will confirm if you ask about the senior school.

Did you ever worry his academic needs wouldn’t be as well met at St CC. We are considering a sixth form place, having previously been at another local independent that we found favoured academic/sporting and other achievements over personal development. For us this has resulted in a child with an excellent academic record but low self esteem and confidence. I am looking for a school that will help balance a strong academic profile whilst offering strong personal growth and leadership opportunities to all.

katgab · 02/12/2025 20:57

@Anxiousmum1010 - I can only say that my son had a good time there, achieved good GCSEs and a levels and is just finishing his 1st term at his 1st choice Russell group uni. Pastoral care seemed pretty good and he’s got some lovely supportive friends from his time there. He was a perfect, subject mentor, supported football in the prep school, did drama and music as extra curriculars and went on some fantastic trips.

Myherts · 05/02/2026 10:07

Strongly disagree. Can’t say anything negative about such a wonderful prep school which captures community and happiness for children. Class sizes are about 15 and I find TA support excellent. In terms of girls ratios they are ahead of other competition who have just recently moved to coed for business reasons. I think all children can flourish in this special place , both academic and lesser able.
