Private schools in southend

Hello,

my DS is currently year 2 and we are looking for a well rounded prep for him to join. We aren’t local to Southend so have no idea where to start, especially as all schools have great marketing teams who do a great job tackling what parents want. I’ve done a little digging and can see mixed messages surrounding their environment.

Can someone who goes there or has a valuable insight please let me know your thoughts, particularly focused on;

meritocracy - an issue I’m seeing with Prep schools is that there’s favouritism, teachers child or children who SLT see as favourites that gets plays, recognition etc. this really bugs me as it’s so disheartening to kids.

bullying - what’s the school approach to bullying or un kind behaviour?

academic strengths - my DS is quite bright and even passed a test for Chigwell (too far logistically) but wonder if they will be adequately encouraged. At their current school they are a bit bored and the boredom is being interpreted as “disruptive”. DS is not really being challenged but the less able children are focused on.

Character building - my biggest focus is nurture and character building - what’s the schools take on this?

Saint Pierre School | Learning For Life | Leigh-on-Sea, Essex is well worth a look. It's got great pastoral care and the teachers are hot on bullying, the children are stretched and gain excellent 11+ results but are happy and it's not a hot house. They view each child as an individual and their extra curricular offerings are good too.

I know parents who have been happy with Thorpe Hall, St Michael’s and St Pierre.
There are some pretty good state primaries in the area too though. Meritocracy is a problem in all schools IME, state and primary. All the privates and the better state also cater well to academics.

i have 2 boys, now older teens who went through Thorpe Hall from nursery to year 11. My eldest who is now at uni was there under the previous head and whilst he was very happy, the school wasn’t great under him. By the time my younger son came through , the new head had taken over and has turned the school round. In my opinion, bullying is dealt with very well. It’s not tolerated at all. The pupils are stretched far more than when my eldest was there and there are now so many extra academic things they do - grammar plus for one. They do view each child as an individual. My youngest was there for prep, went to our local catchment for years 7-10 (his idea) and then had to come back to Thorpe Hall. They were amazing. He was behind in many subjects but all the teachers supported him so well and he got good GCSE grades.

apologies, I have just seen you’re looking for prep. I don’t know as much about the prep school but they do a lot to prepare them for 11+ if that’s what you want. I do think it’s a very nurturing school. Also look at Alleyn Court next door which is prep only. Hope that helps.
