Has anyone challenged compulsory school meals in seniors?

My eldest (asd) in Y8 is struggling with school meals, he really doesn't like them. Has tried a few options, including plain cheese sandwiches but says the bread is awful. He was avoiding the dinner hall altogether but has been told by me and his teachers he needs to go along everyday.

I wondered if he was struggling with the social side (who to sit with, joining people already at the table) but he insists it's just the food. He is a fussy eater, although not terrible. I'm starting to resent paying £5.25per day when he isn't actually eating, tbh I resent that it's compulsory but I knew that when we applied. I had thought he would find something to eat everyday, even if it was just pasta but it's basically nothing, maybe the odd dessert. Obviously it's not healthy for him either.

Has anyone challenged their school on this? I think the food is actually well thought of by the pupils so its definitely a DS problem rather than a school problem.

A high level of food selectivity is extremely common with ASD, so I would consider approaching this as a SEN accomodation/special dietary need. What does the school policy say about meals for students who have specific dietary needs? I would reach out to the tutor, head of year/section, or SENCO (depending on who you think is likely to be most helpful) to discuss options.
