Looking for a unicorn school

My DD currently attends Hanford school in Dorset and she loves it. She is naturally academic and keen to try all things. We are currently looking at potentially relocating from Dorset to North Wales, and looking for a unicorn (ideally girls) senior school. We would like her to have a similar curriculum, French, Latin, Textiles (as she loves it) with a variety of interesting sports available. A strong pastoral feel is essential and ideally class sizes under 20, with not an enormous school size. Can anyone make any suggestions? If we can avoid boarding that would be ideal, but will if necessary for continuity. I have been trawling the net but struggle to find anything in Wales.

Habs Monmouth is co-ed but offer a brilliant textiles course Senior - Haberdashers' Monmouth School. They also offer a great range of sports.

Howell's Girls in Cardiff might also be worth a look. They don't offer Textiles but they do offer Product Design and this can be a textiles project (for GCSE). They offer Latin and French and a choice of sports. Independent Day School Llandaff, Cardiff | Howell's GDST

None of the above suggestions would work if you are going to be living in North Wales.
It depends whereabouts in North Wales but you might be able to consider Chester for schooling, in which case The Queen's School, Chester would be right up your street.

How old are your unicorns?

Borris · 11/01/2025 19:50

My dd school in Cornwall fits the bill - it does have boarding

Unicorn just means so good that it's hard to believe it exists.

Moreton Hall? Just over the border, close to Llangollen, Wrexham, Oswestry.

She will be 13 (year 9) when we propose to move.

Habs Monmouth have a great link with Jimmy Choo, so their Textiles course will be extra special.

Monmouth is not near north wales though

op will you be near Chester? Kings or queens schools might be good. Or perhaps Ellesmere in Shropshire. Ruthin school is a private school but not sure how good it is. There is also Rydal Penrhos in Colwyn Bae which might be an option

we will be near Rhosneigr, Anglesey so pretty far out but we’re open to living closer to the border if it will open up options as they’re looking pretty slim around us. Ruthin’s seems to be a possible option, thanks for the other suggestions too, I’ll take a look!

Habs Monmouth does offer boarding, though it would be a right arse to get to from Anglesey way!

Friend’s daughter went to a teeny tiny school in Bangor and loved it

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/01/2025 23:01

The only two nearby that I can think of are St Gerard's in Bangor and St David's in Llandudno.
If you move close to the border you have Kings, Queens and Abbey Gate in and around Chester

Another vote here for Ruthin - good sized school with a small friendly feel to it. Also has strong financial backing which is a major factor when looking at schools at the moment.
