Private School fees insurance

solankirajesh · 05/10/2024 22:36

The private school that my daughter attends does not have school fee insurance in case my daughter has illness and cannot attend school. Does any one know any insurance company or broker who can provide this coverage ?

Is this just an excuse to start a thread with private school fees in the title?

Labtastic · 05/10/2024 23:09

OP has literally posted in the Private School topic - what is wrong with you?

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 05/10/2024 23:11

Are you looking for cover to pay fees if your dd is ill??

Most independent schools offer this through an insurer. For a small premium per term, usually around £50, you can claim back the cost of missed days for illness if it's (for us, anyway) three or more consecutive days. They're well claimed on in our school, as it covers weekend days as part of the three. Why wouldn't you claim back missed days? You might not have heard, as MN has been so quiet on this topic, but school fees are expensive Grin

99OrangeBalloons · 05/10/2024 23:20

"Why wouldn't you claim back on missed days?"

Because it isn't the school's fault you missed them 🤷🏻‍♀️ sure if the teacher was off sick and your child wasn't taught, there's a claim, but not because you've not sent your child into school?

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 05/10/2024 23:28

@Labtastic thank you - I had no idea!

Blessedbunny · 05/10/2024 23:28

Nothings ‘wrong with me’. Was a joke. Well it made me smile. So many threads on private schools, given so few of ‘our children’ go to them.

Would that there were as much thought and effort, questions and concerns into state schools, perhaps they’d have a chance at improving.

Sorry didn’t mean to derail. I didn’t realise insurance for school fees was a thing. I can’t imagine it’s easy to claim.

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 05/10/2024 23:29

@99OrangeBalloons but it’s the insurer who covers cost, so no impact on school.

It's the insurer that pays, not the school 🙄

It's so weird though. It's like coming onto the Parenting topic, and saying "did you just start this thread to boast about being a parent?" There are different topics that are of interest to different people - maybe you should just hide the private school one?

(Also, it's ridiculously easy to claim on our school policy, and it pays out very quickly.)

Labtastic · 05/10/2024 23:44

@solankirajesh this is who operates our school scheme - I don't know whether they offer policies to individuals though

What? You misunderstand. Don’t worry.

I’ve never heard of it, as far as I know schools my children have been at (prep and secondary) have never mentioned it. As parents we’ve not discussed it. So it was a surprise.

Yes I would like to have a cover if my dd is ill. She has not been well and would like to ensure that there is a cover in case she has to miss school if she needs to be hospitalised etc.

I know that private schools have insurance coverage which they provide for fee. But my daughter’s school does not have one. So was wondering if I can get a private cover directly with some insurance company / broker. Thanks 🙏

Surely it’s too late to insure against this as it is a pre-existing condition?

Perhaps hide the topic if it bothers you that much?

Yeah, rather agree on this, especially if you are going for an individual policy

(if a school offers it to all pupils, it would possibly be condition-blind as the risk would be the age group average risk)

? What are you talking about? Bizarre

LiveOutLoudRose · 06/10/2024 20:22

OP I would definitely speak to a broker. You don't need a specialised one. There are lots of high street brokers you can speak to (usually if they can't assist they can direct you to someone more specialised).

After COVID, fewer and fewer companies are offering these policies (some had to pay out, others just found children were being kept off more, and people were claiming on them).

As others have said, there may be an issue of pre-existing conditions, but that's why you need to speak to a broker.

I have always taken out these policies (offered through school) because I am self-employed. So I don't get compassionate leave, dependents leave etc. I also have a job where I couldn't "make up" hours in evenings and weekends etc.

So if one of my children was ill for an extended period of time this would effectively go towards my lost income. Also on my critical illness have coverage for the children, again a lump sum if they got critically ill which would mean I could take time off work to be with them in hospital etc.

Do you take out travel insurance? That would pay out if you were unable to go on a holiday you had paid for because you broke your leg. It obviously wouldn't be the tour operator's fault any more than it would be the school's. It's the same principle.

You're complaining that there are so many threads about private schools on the private school board?!

I have some bad news for you as ALL the threads on this board are about private schools.

You can hide the topic/board if it bothers you

Rocknrollstar · 10/10/2024 20:05

We took out this insurance and paid the premium right thru DCs secondary education. He was very seriously ill in yr 12 and missed a half term of school and were very grateful for the insurance.

Xenia · 11/10/2024 10:57

We were always offered this but I never chose to accept it as mine were just about never off sick so seemed money down the drain to me.

Hoppinggreen · 11/10/2024 11:16

I am very anti boarding school so I don't go onto that Board
If you wany to complain about Private Schools or the fact that people post about them then don't come onto this Board
