A Warning About the RRF.

The RRF (Reading Reform Foundation) are a forum based here who seem to think they know much more about reading and, indeed, our own children, than we, or our children's teachers do.

They have a thread here where they alternately post threads from here so that different members can visit us and post lots of encouragment to try their new, and brilliant, method and slag off our children, us, and their teachers. It is very unclear for their forum who they actually are and it all seems very cult-like.

They seem to post here under a variety of different names (although the Australian one mentioned that she couldn't join in, so obviously not all of them post here), although 'maizie' seems to post very bully-ish posts over here under a similar name.

You have been warned

To be fair, they are mostly reading professionals and have spend their lives studying the teaching of reading. I'm not a member and am not a professional myself, however.

Is this an ad by stealth ?

Sarah111213 · 10/07/2010 16:52

Professionals should take a more, erm, professional attitude and stop being so patronising and insulting.

Definitely not an ad by stealth, LIZS.

I am a genuine poster.

I can see what you mean, Sarah, especially when we are 'discussed'. However, I think they do genuinely want to help Mners.

DebbieHepplewhite and Maisie are also very well respected posters on TES Early Years and Primary.

mrz · 10/07/2010 17:26

I'm not sure what you are warning people about Sarah.
The way I read the thread you linked to it's purpose was to try and help posters on here who are asking for help and advice ...
I have great respect for both Debbie and maizie as fellow teaching professionals ... and no I'm not a member of the RRF group ...

Malaleuca · 11/07/2010 00:52

They are good value posts from Debbie and Maizie, who take the trouble to post advice regarding the teaching of reading. If they were lawyers they would be charging pounds per minute for their advice!
It's a funny old world when people suspect underhand motives for advice they are free to take or leave.

Feenie · 11/07/2010 00:55

Blimey - for the first time, I totally agree with Malaleuca!

coppertop · 11/07/2010 11:43

I've just had a look at the linked thread and can't honestly see a problem with it. I'm not a teacher and don't think I've ever 'met' any of the posters online and so have no particular bias either way.

If I ever have a question about reading, they're more than welcome to come on here and offer me some advice.

On the thread in question on their forum, someone made a comment about MN being full of 'middle class mamas' that presumably upset some people. That person has just apologized and obviously didn't intend an off-the-cuff irritated remark to be seen by people on another forum, so I think it's a bit harsh to 'warn' people about them.

maizieD · 11/07/2010 14:54

LRD says:
"That person has just apologized and obviously didn't intend an off-the-cuff irritated remark to be seen by people on another forum,"

And we've put her on the Naughty Step to reflect on her inappropriate behaviour

But seriously. I am aware that my views on dyslexia upset some mumsnetters and I am sorry for that, though I don't retract them.

We have been having an interesting discussion on that theme on the RRF thread flagged up here (RRF ) It starts at about P3 or 4.

And thank you Feenie, Mrz and Malaleuca
