Inspired by the teacher-gift threads.

This happened on TES once and it made the papers. It was seen as ungrateful.

I'm not a teacher a nursery officer, but we also get gifts, some of my work colleagues were given easter eggs by two sets of parents they were very good friends so bought there gifts together all the time, so they bought a room with 3 members of staff in 2 easter eggs

A parent gave us christmas cards and presents on my card she wrote Nursery nurse (which i didn't mind) and my work colleague she wrote nursery assistant and spelt her name wrong(which she did mind as she isn't one) and she didn't give the third member of the room anything. Even though she knew she worked in the room, i thought that was rude.

Have also been given wine lots, which i don't like, but thats not there fault, just a personal preference.

We have lovely parents at my school - the nicest present has been the hamper full of lovely organic delights, plus a picture album of that year group, all nicely scrap-booked.

99% of time, lovely presents- vouchers, wine, flowers, gorgeous canvas painting by a child. Also, I love a 'thank you'- I had a very difficult child with behaviour issues & his mum wrote me a lovely letter thanking me for all my support during the year with her son- that made me cry!
Personally I'm not keen on 'best teacher' ornamnets, mugs etc- I have several boxes of them in my loft which I haven't got the heart to throw out
Most awful present? an ornamental glass musical box with a sort of stuffed bird in!!Oh & Lambrini!

I always get lovely things from the kids. My friend who teaches in another school got a thong for Xmas from one of the kids...

Needaname · 12/07/2010 22:19

Anything that the poor parent has been badgered into buying and is a waste of money like a Best Teacher mug. Chocolates don't get wasted! Our receptionist stores and rations them and they keep us going until Christmas. I love personal notes from parents.

I had a battery operated glass statue of Christ that changed colour in a silk lined box

I think it was from the pound shop

midnightexpress · 12/07/2010 22:26

I was once given a stuffed piranha fish by a student. She was Brazilian, so it sort of made sense. It still sits in my bathroom, about 15 years later. I'm very fond of it.

An ornamental cello that played a tune when you wound it up, and as a bonus it was a cigarette lighter too.

Coca · 13/07/2010 20:16

What about baked goods? I once made cupcakes (not as a leaving gift) and they ended up in the staff room. I overheard a member of staff asking who made them before accepting one, luckily my name seemed to pass the test but imagine if it hadn't!

When I was 7 my dad, a teacher at my school, bought a packet of Consulate cigarettes for me to give to my teacher as an end of term present. I cringe when I think of it and she did pull an embarrassed face when she pulled it out of the packet. This was the 1970s though and you had to battle through a fug of cigarette smoke whenever you passed the staffroom!!

"a battery operated glass statue of Christ that changed colour in a silk lined box" . I HAVE to have one.

Coca · 13/07/2010 20:44

asking as a parent btw, my post looks a little muddled (obviously not a teacher, bad spelling punctuation etc)

A sequined, sparkly holographic, twinkly picture of Mecca. I worked in a private school where all the children were muslims. I got lots of fabulous over the top presents. I did keep most of them in the classroom for decoration though =)
