Yr 2 Report & at the bottom level of subjects

Just had DD's report through. She is summer born, so young for her year. Her report shows that she is in the bottom of all her subjects, apart from science, where she is at a similar level to her peers.

She wasn't doing very well with her reading, but since reading almost every night since xmas, she is ahead (with the reading books) of most of her classmates. However, she is still in the bottom % of her class. I looked at her sats english comprehension paper & saw she was marked at 2c. Her report marks her at 2B. How can she be reading higher books - 20-25mins to read 32 pages & she can understand what she is reading - yet be rated so low ?

Maths seems to terrify her....is rated 2C & is in the bottom 3 of her class.

DH & I are very concerned she is getting behind, well, she is behind & I am wondering how we can help her before she goes into year 3 ?

In terms of reading ability she may well be good at decoding words and reading the books she's given but the sats tends to put weight to the comprehension side.

Once she's read a book can she recap the story? Does she know why its funny if there's a joke in it? Can she talk about what might happen next? Can she imagine how the characters are feeling?

But 2B is average for year 2, isn't it? Is she in a vry high ability class?

What does her teacher say in the "comments" bit of her report?

Goblinchild · 10/07/2010 07:28

Agree about the reading, she can read and decode but the reading sat requires that she read a passage unaided and answer questions on it.
With the maths, does she know her 2, 5 and 10 times tables?
Adding and subtracting a single digit to a two digit number?
Counting on and back in tens?
Try doing some practical and simple mental maths with her every day. Playing shops is a good way to cover a lot of the arithmetic she needs to know. What about knowing shapes and spotting symmetry?
The children in Y2 who come up with a 2c or below are targeted for extra small group support in most schools as they are not achieving age -appropriate levels. Even though she's a summerborn.

But I thought 2b was average, 2c below average but within expected levels ( and surely if she was 6 months older she possibly would be a 2b ie average for y2 and average for her age then) . A nearly 8 year old getting a 2c is surely very different to a nearly 7 year old getting a 2c. The nearly 7 year old is achieving an age appropriate level but the nearly 8 year old isnt.

Thanks for replies. She is in a class of yr 1& 2 the the lower class for maths & english. These results are based on 45 in a class. With a 2b for reading she is in the bottom 18, for writing bottom 11, bottom 9 for maths. DH is wondering where the other summer borns are.

I thought she could understand the story/giggles when funny/ask questions. I am wondering if she perhaps rushed the reading/writing test ? but thanks - ideas to work on.

Ref the maths, I don't think she 'gets' it at all. I've tried to do her 2 x table with her, but she gets cross. I know she has problems with adding/subtracting, counting forward & back in 10's. So clearly need to practise this. She seems ok with shapes/symmetry. I've been to the school to ask for extra help but they have been very vague & say takes some children a while to pick things up.

Off to play Pop to the Shops..

Just to add - the results you have been given aren't just based on the tests. They will have been collated over the year using lots of sources of evidence to contribute to the teacher assessment and the tests are just a small part.

So the 2b will be based on where she is day to day in the classroom, not just in a test.

lovingthesun · 10/07/2010 13:44

yes I realise that - both tests were marked at 2C. She did achieve A for effort though..

This site is excellent for Year 1 and Year 2 Maths games - perhaps she would prefer that to 'doing' tables with her?

lovingthesun · 10/07/2010 16:21

thanks for the suggestion - I'm sure she'll enjoy that much more ! I've bookmarked it for later.

Woodlands Junior School has an excellent interactive learning zone.

seeker · 11/07/2010 08:20

I think she must be in a very high achieving class - what does her teacher say about her progress?

I'm surprised they gave you her class positions like that - it doesn't help, I think, particularly if you have a very young child in a class, or one who is a bit of a slow burner, to compare to others (tempting though it is). What you need to look at, perhaps, is where she is in relation to where she was this time last year.

loujay · 11/07/2010 08:32

I too have a summer born Yr 2 girl.
For her sats she got 1's for everything apart from reading, for which she got a 2A.
I am not panicking!!
I know how far behind she is, she works at her own pace and was NEVER going to do well at SATS.
I console myself with the thought that KS1 Sats are very rarely put on CV's

OrmRenewed · 11/07/2010 08:37

CHildren do get things at their own rate. I would be happy if a teacher said that to me instead of pushing a child harder than suited her. My youngest sounds exactly like yours - reading good, writing improving but maths is a joke But I can see some slow improvement. I suspect his levels will be lower than your DD's which sound fine btw - don't worry about her position in the class. I can guarantee that won't be on her CV either

paddingtonbear1 · 11/07/2010 13:11

loujay my dd sounds similar to yours. We're not panicking yet either - dd is also summer born, young for her age and has always struggled with reading and maths. Her teacher says she has made a lot of progress this year, which dh and I are happy about.

ncom · 13/07/2010 10:15

"CHildren do get things at their own rate"

Very well said. DD got her yr1 reports and got 1C and 1B. Last week teacher told me she has dramatically improved her writing, reading and numbers. Told DP about what the teacher said and how the report the report contradicts it. DP asked teacher, what time were the reports done ? Teacher said, reports were done 3-4 weeks ago and hers was the first group to do it. If it was done Today her levels would be completely different.
Dp was glad to hear that. But it causes further worry to me now. In the next yr she will have a different teacher and I hope he doesn't put her in lower sets ( based on her reports). I am planing to make her study a bit in the summer vacation so she doesn't loose out on what she did.
Hmmm.....
(the groups/sets seem to cause so much worries)

op - re maths, does she like music?

if so, we have this times tables CD which does it to music. i will try it on DD when she's a bit older, singing was how she learnt the alphabet.
