Am I overthinking this (re dd's report)

Dd receives a report at christmas, one at easter and one in the summer. The first two just give grades for a few subjects - mainly reading, writing, science, maths. Grades are A (well above average) B (above average) L (average) D (below average)

In the first two reports dd had A/B for reading and A/B and then A for science. In the end of year report now she has B for both. Now I know that's still great etc but I'm wondering why? Do you think it is because this last report is based on results from end of year tests?

How old is she? I teach secondary age and it is not uncommon for a student's grades to change over the course of a year - I base end of term grades on how the student has done that term, so X might have done very well in what we were doing in the first term, gaining an A average, but might not have found the second term's work so easy, gaining a B average. Could this be the case for your DD?

Maybe. She is in Year 4. It's just because it's presented as an annual report, rather than a summer report.

bump because I'm contemplating whether it's worth asking the teacher or whether it will make me look like a nutter

you cou;d try and approach it in a lighthearted way, e.g. I know this may sound --- but....
My Dh a teacher and he doesnt think you an overthinking nutter. He teaches yr 4.

(He thinks I am an overthinking nutter though)

I think you should ask. It's a reasonable question. "DD seems to have gone from well-above average at the start of the year to just above average now. Is this significant? How have you worked out the grades? Is there anything in particular her teacher should help her focus on next year?" I would ask - but then the DSs' teachers probably can't stand me.

absolutely ask - I'd want to know why my daughter's scores weren't following the pattern set earlier in the year

Personally, I wouldn't ask. I think it is quite normal for grades to fluctuate a little (poor kids if it wasn't). If she had gone from an A to a C, then yes I'd be concerned, or if her marks slowly slid downwards over more than 1 report period but in this case, no.
