DS is just finishing Y1. New class structures mean that 8 children from his class have been identified as likely candidates for a Y2/3 class, and 8 are staying down in the Y1/2 class, which leaves 30 in the straight Y2 class.
DS has been chosen for the Y2/3 class,I have been told,on the basis of his last assessment ( wasn't aware they were assessed in Y1 ) , his learning style ( the Y2/3 class will be taught in a more formal style, more individual work sitting at a desk etc than the straight Y2 class )and his social and emotional development.
I have a few concerns. The straight Y2 teacher is one of the best in the school. The Y2/3 teacher has one of the worst reputations in the school, however, some parents speak well of her. DS will be split from all his friends ( its mostly girls going up ). He'll be primarily with Y3 children, some of whom he knows.
DS does like sitting at a desk working on his own, so I can see the learning style would suit him but am worried as well that its a KS2 learning experience and he's technically KS1, I am concerned he will be expected to behave like a Y3/KS2 child.
The work as I understand it will still be tailored and he'll still do some Y2 stuff ( I think he's been doing some this year, he's currently in a Y1/2 class ).
I technically have a choice to either go with their recommendation or opt for the Y2 straight class but need to let them know ASAP " as we'll offer the place to someone else".
Long winded sorry. WWYD?
