Should we get a report at the end of Reception

I realsie the answer to this should be ask DD's class tracher but she already has me pegged as a "pushy mother" for asking questions in the past...
So - should we expect to get a written report at the end of Reception? What sort of things will it say?

Pretty sure you should, as it's the end of EYFS. DD's had lots of comments about how she was doing in the different areas of the curriculum, and a wrap-up bit about how she was getting on generally. It also had the levels she had achieved against the EYFS targets. Friend's DD (different school) didn't have the levels, but the language looked rather familiar to me, and when I googled a few key phrases it turned out that the teacher had used the exact statements from the EYFS, so friend could work out the levels. I realise I'm sound pushy myself talking about levels ... but it meant we got a good broad idea of how she was doing at reading, writing, maths stuff (shapes and simple numbers at this stage), emotional development, understanding the world, etc.

Thank you. Given that when I ask DD what she does at school she always says "I can't remember" I was pondering how the teacher assesses 28 of them in all these different competencies.

Heh, DD did nothing memorable in YrR, and has yet to do anything memorable in Yr1! Regardless, her teacher last year seemed to have a very good handle on her, as does this year's so far (report next week, so we shall see).

You should get a copy of your daughter's EYFSP, which will tell you exactly which points she has achieved for each area. You're looking for at least 78 points overall - this should include 6 in each area of PSED and CLLD. 6's across the board in each area is broadly inline with national expectations - anything over that is good. 9's mean that a child is ready to embark on the National Curriculum. Every child is entitled to the EYFS curriculum until the end of their 5th year. That means that summer born children are entitled to it - if they need it - in most of Year 1.

Yes I haven't had mine yet either....but I guess there are still a couple of weeks before the end, so we might get it on the last day?

DontCallMeBaby · 05/07/2010 07:42

Last day would be poor practice, as you'd have no chance to discuss any concerns with the teacher. But if you have a couple of weeks to go it could come any time - DD's report is due out this Wednesday, with term ending a fortnight later.

Lara2, do you have the right age? Cos the end of a child's fifth year is their fifth birthday, so no child would be getting EYFS during Yr1, as they're all five by then.

lovecheese · 05/07/2010 13:05

But a child is 5 until the day before their 6th birthday dont forget, and several children in my daughters year are not yet 6.

clemetteattlee · 05/07/2010 13:15

But their fifth year ends when they turn five (their first year being 0-1)?

We received a report and the learning journal that went with DDs EVFS (lots of lovely photos of her achieving things).
I have to say DD has yet to do anything remarkable in year 1. At all three parent teacher meetings the teacher has told as something assuming DD has told us about winning a competition or some such thing. I feel reporting doing nothing to mummy at the end of the day is a default method of getting mummy off your back, because if you say I did X mummy then asks you questions about X.

Yes, all children have an end-of-year report

clemetteattlee · 05/07/2010 21:22

Thank you.

DontcCallMeBaby, lovecheese is right - you're 5 until the day you're 6, so are perfectly entitled to the EY curriculum for that time.

simpson · 07/07/2010 18:49

Yes I think you should.

I have been told that DS (reception) will get his next week

ktee1 · 07/07/2010 18:49

teachers don't have to write a written report on the child at the end of Reception but they must inform parents of the end of FSP outcomes. This might be the grades alone, a written report or a meeting to discuss the FSP. Many authorities have a system which prints off the FSP scores for individual areas of the FSP and then uses this to generate an automatic written report using the statements from the FSP to explain this more fully to parents. It is possibly something like this that has given you a written report where the statements are the same as the FSP.

clemetteattlee · 09/07/2010 23:06

Thanks again, we got a written report but no mention of levels and nothing that matches up with any criteria I can find online.
