KS1 key wordscompleted - what next?

DD has been assessed on all her KS1 keywords (the first 100 plus the additional 200) and recognises/reads them all.

She is under the impression that she will never have to look at another key word list again.

Is she right?
Or should she be getting a list of KS2 keywords?

It depends on how your school does it, I think. At my daughter's last school, they had four books of key words to learn through KS1. The first one had 50 words in it, the last one had 250 words in it. Obviously, between the 4 books, this is far more than the 300 you mention.

But at her new school, she has not had a single key word yet.

(She is year 1).

What a dull way to teach! Hopefully she will never have to look at another daft list again.

My daughter is now having to spell them....

DD does have a weekly spelling test, but she's refusing to bring the words home and insists on preparing herself (ie. doesn't look at them all week) so I'm not sure how the spelling test words tie up with the key words.

Perhaps the school are more subtle about it all in KS2, but as we have another year of KS1 to go I don't want her to go unchallenged until she gets to Yr3.

These words don't challenge do they? They bore children to death. Give your child books - let her read, let her write stories don't give her lists of words to learn.

Definitely not a challenge.
DD is ploughing through books at a huge rate of knots at the moment, making good progress through ORT at school and enjoying being able to read everything at home (and I mean everything, proper novels, science, history, magazines, I'm having to hide the stuff that is definitely age-inappropriate).

I realise that the key words lists are just a tick box excercise for the school really - but if there are more lurking around the corner I would like to know so that
a) she keeps making progress through Yr2.
b) I can gently explain that she hasn't seen the last of them - although she will be disappointed.

I think I need a quick word with her teacher before the end of term.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Agree completely with ICantFindAGoodNickname celebrate the fact that the school now has no excuse to send home pointless lists of words and will actually have to teach reading and spelling

Depending on how the school works they may use Support for Spelling next.

Daisy the idea of the key words is they are taught to read the first set (12ish) then learn to read the next set and at the same time learn to spell the first ... learn to read the third and spell the second ... read fourth spell fifth ........ not learn to read 300 words then learn to spell them! either way is pretty pointless to be honest
