Is it just me?

I've seen many threads on here about ORT, and how people do not enjoy it, and find it boring.

However, I've just been introduced to the wonders of Ginn.

How boring are these books??? What's with all the words randomly dotted over the page?

Give me ORT over Ginn any day!

that magic fecking key

My thoughts exactly rainbowfizz, both my dcs learnt to read with ORT, it was fine and worked for them. Admittedly they were good at learning the sight words, which some dcs aren't.

We also encountered many many DIRE books along the way, which make ORT look like great works of literature in comparison.

Ds's first book was Mr Tickle. Fantastic! Give me a Mr Men book any day.

If you dislike Ginn and/or ORT try the joys of Newway ... The Fat Pig or one two three and away ... Roger has a red hat

emy72 · 01/07/2010 20:43

I might be going against the grain here, but my kids (nearly 4 and 5) absolutely LOVE ORT books. They love them so much that we got the ORT read at home.

They find the stories and the drawings hilarious and they spend ages giggling at them.

They have loads of books at home but always go back to those.

We have also experienced GINN (very boring), Songbirds, Collins Big Cat but ORT is definitely a huge hit with my two.

SuSylvestersNiceSide · 01/07/2010 20:49

It's an oft-mentioned MN truism that ORT are crap, along with 'dcs are supposed to be able to read 95% of their reading book comfortably', 'primary kids suck up foreign languages like a sponge' and 'if you read to the dcs all the time, they will become good readers'. Call me a sceptic, but RL is often fifferent to MN

SuSylvestersNiceSide · 01/07/2010 20:50

different, even

rainbowfizz · 01/07/2010 20:53

Mrz - before I go looking for Newway - sorry I'm very tired - are you being sarcastic about Newway or are you really recommending them?

Rainbowfizz, don't bother getting new reading scheme books, just get the dcs to read the books you used to read to them. (I mean books with lovely pictures and not too much text). They will soon make the transition to regular chapter books.

daisy243 · 01/07/2010 21:00

Newway is pants!!! In my opinion. Give me a Rigby Rocket any day over any of the above mentioned!
Bee

mrz · 01/07/2010 21:07

New way (previously known as Gay Way - wonder why they changed the name) is possibly the most boring reading scheme ever - but they are phonics based you get to meet Jip the cat and Ben the dog Meg the hen and best of all the Fat Pig!

no not recommending them

primarymum · 01/07/2010 21:10

raibbowfizz, I can 100% guarantee mrz is being sarcastic, have you ever seen Roger and his bloody red hat! Newway and One, two three and away should be consigned to the furthest reaches of the universe, never to return ( can you tell I was a reading helper in a class with this series, I once heard The Village with three corners FIVE times in one day ( shudders at the thought!)

mrz · 01/07/2010 21:12

but Roger lives in a house with a red roof!

mrz · 01/07/2010 21:13

not to mention that naughty Percy Green (why wasn't he Graham Green hat?)

rainbowfizz · 01/07/2010 21:24

My dc have shelves and shelves of books, every time I find something they are into (tv, topic (space/romans/egypt etc), film etc) I buy them a book. They refuse to look at them, and will only read the school books that their teacher has told them to read. They now get sent 4 books 3 times a week each to read from school, because they told their teachers they needed more books to read.

Reading schemes are the only things they will read!!!! Youngest is only on level 4 I can see this being a very long and painful process. The oldest is now at secondary school, and will still only read the class book for English.

Any suggestions - HELP
