Can someone give me a quick explanation as to how it works? DD1 starting reception in Sept so am just curious. Won't be grilling her on all areas I promise!

It seems like they don't necessarily need to do all the other points to be able to do point 9, for example DD can't dress herself without some help but does concentrate on her activities pretty well. Also would a child have to be some kind of super genius to get 9s all across the board or do I just have low expectations for my kid? She has only just turned 4, do they really learn that much in reception year?

I think 6's are average at the end of reception, so don't panic!

oooh, interested to read this as I have no idea either and ds scored 9 across the board

MathsMadMummy · 01/07/2010 14:05

can you link to an online version?

I've seen a few lists of targets etc but not seen anything about levels, 9s etc. would be interested to see

here

Somebody else linked to it on another thread. I think what's confusing me most is that one point does not seem to lead to the next point. Somebody explain it to me please!!

The points are not consecutive i.e. achieving point 5 is not necessarily a pre-requisite for achieving point 6.

You can only achieve a level 9 if you have also achieved all of the points 1-8.

I seem to remember that 2/3 is average at the end of pre-school and 5/6 is average at the end of reception.

MathsMadMummy · 01/07/2010 15:37

about to read through it, do they assess children based on this then?

mrz · 01/07/2010 17:24

The EYFS profile points are not hierarchial which is why they don't lead into the next letsblowthistacostand points 1-3 are often achieved in nursery and with a couple of exception points 4-8 can be achieved in any order point 9 can only be awarded if all 8 previous points have been achieved

The important thing to remember is that while teachers assess using the profile only 20% of evidence can come from activities with an adult the teacher must be confident the child is using the skills/knowledge independently in play. Many children can happily achieve points when interacting with adults but fail to do so in play.

Runoutofideas · 01/07/2010 17:47

Mrz - Please could you explain the logic behind that? I don't understand why being able to do it when asked isn't enough. Surely when they are in a free play situation they will choose the bits they enjoy most, rather than showing off their potential skills. Eg I can do quadratic equations, but would not choose to do so unless someone asked me to. How is this different? (I'm not trying to be argumentative - just a bit confused....)

mrz · 01/07/2010 19:11

EYFS ...logic ... that doesn't happen often
