Spelling mistakes in school newsletter. WWYD?

My daughter has been allocated a place at our third choice school for September. It's a very small school, and it's the closest one to us. I have acquaintances and friends who are sending their children there and already have children there, and I get nothing but positive feedback about it. But I'm still not sure. There are a few issues I'm concerned about, one of which is the fact that there are regularly spelling mistakes in the weekly school newsletter. They aren't just 'typos' - they're genuine misspellings such as using the word 'formally', when they mean 'formerly'.

In my heart of hearts I think that this could be a problem (is this indicative of standards / staffing issues there - although I already have the exam stats etc) or do you think it's just a case of the newsletter being the 'last thing on the list' on teachers' workloads - and that I shouldn't be too concerned?

I would like to raise it with someone but am afraid of seeming picky or pedantic. I would like a good relationship with her school and not to gain a reputation among the staff there before she's even started. What would you do?

Green Ink?

RollaCoasta · 25/06/2010 22:11

orienteer it's really not a joke when, as a teacher, you get messages highlighted when you haven't had the chance to read them (this happened when I'd been out of school on a week's course), or a rare typo highlighted (yes, in red).

It is really annoying, when it could be done in a much more subtle and less arrogant way.

It just looks like you're trying to get one over the teacher. Not nice.

We're all trying.

I'd be inclined to request that they implement a 'whole school' approach to spelling i.e. one where they put the poor speller in with the year 1 spelling group.

lol "In British journalism, Green Ink is supposedly a major identifying characteristic of written correspondence from self-aggrandising pedants, cranks, charlatans and eccentrics."

that'll be me then. When I have to correct someone's work, I only ever used green. Red seems too harsh somehow

I don't know what you should do about it OP, haven't a clue but it isn't good.

Rollacoasta - OK, hands-up, the thing is I pay for DS's education. The way I see it is that I am actually a customer.....I appreciate value for money........surely?

RollaCoasta · 25/06/2010 22:24

I agree - I don't think there should be mistakes in any newsletter, whether you're paying for the school or not! I just don't like the red (or green!) marking! I think it could just be 'mentioned' quietly to the admin staff.

I think my position as official editor of the school newsletter is very important , even though it sometimes makes me feel awkward changing the head's grammar!

I mark my students' work in green

It is my job, amongst other things!

RollaCoasta · 25/06/2010 22:29

So...... I mark my students' work in red. Are you cross Zen? Why?

ZZZenAgain · 25/06/2010 22:31

me no, not at all

tired though, very tired

ZZZenAgain · 25/06/2010 22:33

Am I writing like a maniac or something, I don't even notice it?

RollaCoasta · 25/06/2010 22:33

Me too. I think we should leave the others to mark our work, and we should go to bed.

orienteerer · 25/06/2010 22:33

Arrggghh........please, please re-read my post. I didn't say I had ever sent in a red (or green) correction, it's just what I FEEL like doing when I receive a letter/email with a mistake, , !

RollaCoasta · 25/06/2010 22:44

You suggested that it would be a good idea around nine-ish, but, I agree, you never said you'd done it!!

(People do, though, orienteer.... people do.)

orienteerer · 25/06/2010 22:50

Thankyou RollaCoasta

mrz · 26/06/2010 08:21

I always use green pen for marking books as do a number of other staff because it stands out from the children's work while not appearing for damning as red.
I don't think orienteerer's link applies when it's used for ticks and underlined orthographic errors.
