I was just looking back through some old (2008!) posts and saw a recommendation from you for Headsprout and I had a couple of questions - I hope you don't mind!

I have a dyslexic nearly 8 year old who is really struggling with reading. His (new) school have been great mainly because he has extra help from a TA who is assigned to another child who is often away. But despite the individual help he still reads 'i-n, in' 'd-a-d, dad' and seems to have very little recognition of the basics. He loves books and thankfully hasn't been put off the idea of reading but seems to be at a standstill.

His SENCO has concerns about his slow progress and is putting him in for a statement. His maths is fortunately ok and his teacher is happy with his classwork although she is concerned that he is going to start to run into difficulties accessing the curriculum soon.

He adores computer games so I was looking into getting Headsprout as a summer 'treat'. So, do you think it would work as a programme for a dyslexic child and were you still happy with it through the course?

Many thanks.

I'm not moondog but am familiar with Headsprout. HS does work on fluency and blending. You need to sit with son to make sure he is responding as required - it's not a programme you can park him in front of. (I'm not suggesting you would but it does happen)There was a HS yahoo group, don't know if it is still active.
Another way to work on fluency at this early stage is to use the BRI books from www.piperbooks.co.uk

Thanks Malaleuca. I was kind of hoping to let him get on with it. Not neglectful parenting as such but 3 little ones to look after...

I'm off to check out the BRI books.
