just moved to scotland from england, since they start a year earlier in england DS has completed almost a full year already. i have some concerns that he might become bored/frustrated having covered a lot of the work already.. does anyone have any experience of that and any advice?

Is your DS at the end of his Reception year then? The cut-off date for starting school is different in Scotland in that a child must be 4 years before 1 March to start school that August, even if this is the case the start date can be deferred until the following August. This means you can have a range of 12 months+ within one year group.
Have you visited the school he will be going to? It might be worth chatting it through with the school which year they think he should join based on the work already covered and when his birthday falls.
Hope you get it sorted.

yes he left school in April in England, doesnt start untill August here in Scotland. The school are aware he's been in Reception but so far havent mentioned any alternatives... socially i dont think he'd be happy in an older class and being the youngest and i'm not worried about him repeating work so long as he doesnt get bored... was just curious of anyone elses experiences.

yep he's going in at Primary 1 when he would be in his 2nd year in England. i know theres more to school than just the reading and writing and sums but onviously dont want him getting bored and restless.

When is his birthday Itchyfeet? DS1 is going into P1 in August, when he'll be nearly 5 (in Nov), so actually one of the younger ones in the class - most of his nursery friends have already turned 5. And because younger children in the cohort can defer for a year, there's a wee girl down the road who's going to be in his class who will be 6 in December. All of which to say, if he's somewhere in there, I wouldn't worry too much because there will obviously be quite a range of abilities in his class.

My friend's DD is in P1 this year, she was 5 in Jan, and was reading pretty well by the end of the first term, so I think Chuck is right in that p1 is more the equivalent of the 2nd year in the English system.

cool.. he was 5 in March, i'm sure he'll be fine as long as he concentrates and doesnt think he knows it all lol
