I would really appreciate some ideas, my ds is in year 1 and has just started to enjoy reading but he's not very keen on the ORT books, I bought a Horrid Henry book and the level was about right but he says he doesn't want another one! I'm reading him Swallows and Amazons at bedtime which he's really enjoying. Thank you muchly

DS1 (now 8) loves the Beast Quest series by Adam Blade. And there are loads of them.

Also, try the Astrosaurs books by somebody Cole (I think). He also writes the Cows In Action series but DS1 wasn't too keen on those. (Which actually is code for I didn't like them when I had to read them at bedtime!)

Dinosaur Cove stories but can't remember who writes them.

Erm, trying to think what else DS1 has read over the last couple of years ...

Flat Stanley?

TimothyTigerTuppennyTail · 15/06/2010 22:35

Harry and his bucket of bloody dinosaurs.

Thanks so much, I'm just opening an amazon window to look at all of those, I really want to encourage him whilst the enthusiasm is there

DS has just started reading the Magical Children series and is really enjoying them

merrymonsters · 15/06/2010 23:00

Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. They're pretty funny.

mollymawk · 15/06/2010 23:08

My DS1 liked the Faraway Tree books (if you are okay with Enid Blyton).

There are some funny books by Roddy Doyle called The Rover Adventures (three books in one, I think that is).

mollymawk · 15/06/2010 23:10

There are also lots of series of one-off short paperbacks for this sort of age - can't remember any specific ones right now though but they are usually called "Young Readers" or some such thing.

busymummy3 · 15/06/2010 23:15

Anything by Roald Dahl- The Twits, The Magic Finger, Matilda. Also Captain Underpants books. My 6 year old just finished Alice in Wonderland.

treacletart · 15/06/2010 23:56

The Mr Gum books are very very funny.

iloveasylumseekers · 16/06/2010 00:00

there's an astrosaurs box set on the book people at the moment.

alittlebitbored · 16/06/2010 06:27

The Magic Treehouse series is great for boys that age

legalalien · 16/06/2010 11:06

How to train your dragon books by Cressida Cowell. DS is only 5, so he's reading the first para of each chapter and I'm reading the rest - it's certainly improving his reading!

mrsruffallo · 16/06/2010 11:11

Usborne Yong Reading do shorter books than the one mentioned, and have lots of interesting topics. They also have different reading levels, so you can choose acccording to ability

second the Dirty Bertie books - my DS much preferred them to the Horrid Henry ones!

BobLoblaw · 16/06/2010 12:43

Thank you so much I just spent too much money on Amazon and started my christmas shopiing on The Book People

I read a few of the reviews and lots of your ideas look perfect for ds, I think me may start with Roddy Doyle. Thanks again.

Just wanted to update and say thank you. My ds has finished an Astrosaurs book and started Flat Stanley, he was reading at the breakfast table this morning, on the school bus and at bed time! He's really enjoying them and wanted to swap his football stickers for another book so thank you from ds and me.
