reception/Year One aged girls on stage doing a belly dance in teeny tiny twinkly tops with legs/tummy on display? All boys topless as warriors?

My boys would be mortified, kids laugh at that kind of thing, kids laughed at my DS holiday pic as he was in his swim shorts!! He was really upset. I wouldn't let mind do it.

tummytickler · 13/06/2010 13:35

I would be unhappy - belly dancing is a 'sexy' dance imo, and unsuitable for little girls - there are millions of dances, why would they choose that?
5 year old girls doing the Charleston would be adorable (for example) - why bellydancing?
My eldest dd would not have done this - she would have been mortified. My yound dd does not care and would do it, but I would not want her to - too grown up.

Tinuviel · 13/06/2010 14:05

Absolutely not!! Completely unsuitable for small girls. The boys, it would depend on how they felt about it and what they were actually doing.

IndigoBell · 13/06/2010 16:46

I would definately complain and not let my daughter do it. I definately don't want her to act sexy at age 5. Complain.

Thanks everyone! So it's not just me being über-puritanical.

Sadly, the said show has already taken place: the choreography and costume were a well-hidden secret, uncovered to a theatre full of unsuspecting parents on Friday morning.

I am thinking about complaining.

Why the need for any of the children to be in any way stripped? Odd. I have DS's and wouldn't see the need for it tbh.

Bonsoir · 13/06/2010 16:58

I wish the school could have kept to a children's theme. Why get them doing adult dances?

Ds appeared topless as a Maori chief age 5. The girls were suitably dressed though.

Bonsoir · 13/06/2010 17:08

And were you OK with that?

Runoutofideas · 13/06/2010 18:15

I agree - the girls costumes sound awful and I wouldn't want mine to wear them. Regarding the boys, it wouldn't be so much the fact that they are topless that concerned me, more that they are being warriors - very stereotypical and glorifying fighting in my opinion....

thirtyfivepence · 13/06/2010 19:51

Er, yeah- we are in NZ so it would be pretty weird not to be.

I was more worried about the cultural implications of my blond blue eyed boy playing a respected leader.

thirtyfivepence · 13/06/2010 19:51

Suppose I should also say he now goes to a boys school and all the female parts in the school play are played by boys.

Bonsoir · 13/06/2010 21:55

Oh gosh don't get me started on what the bleeding show portrayed . Little girls who were seemingly attired as and dancing in the manner of Indian child prostitutes; boys as warriors; and then some more little girls being African water carriers...

I would be mortified, and would def complain.

atworknotworking · 14/06/2010 15:08
Shock
Hullygully · 14/06/2010 15:12

Didn't they have any attractive Nubian slaves? Or concubines? I'd be pointing out their narrow choice of female servitudes. There are so many to portray.

Bonsoir · 14/06/2010 16:42

Thanks for your suggestions, HullyGully - I'll drop a few hints to the choreographer teacher, at our meeting tomorrow. I'm sure they'll go right over her empty head she'll take them on board for next year
